Hurricane Joaquin became a category 4 hurricane on October 1st. With maximum sustained winds of 130 mph, the Bahamas experienced hurricane force winds, storm surges, and heavy rains. The Bahamas lie southeast of Florida and northeast of Cuba in the North Atlantic Ocean.
Currently, Joaquin is moving generally southwestward at about 6 mph; a turn toward the northwest and north is expected on October 2nd. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues to issue advisories for the Atlantic on Hurricane Joaquin.
