Librarian of Congress Presents Programs Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
The Affirmative Action and Special Programs Office is sponsoring
the following events for the Library's 1993 Hispanic Heritage Month
(September 15 - October - 15):
On Monday, September 20, in the Mary Pickford Theater, James
Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave., S.E., from noon to 1:00
p.m., a showing of the film "The Milagro Beanfield War," Part I,
will be presented as the first in a series of Hispanic films at the
Library. Part II of "The Milagro Beanfield War" will be shown on
September 27, also at noon in the Mary Pickford Theater.
On Tuesday, September 28, in the Mary Pickford Theater, from noon
to 1:00 p.m., Larry Applebaum of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting,
and Recorded Sound Division will present a lecture, "History of the
Salsa," with audiophonic illustrations.
The Hispanic Heritage Month Keynote Program will be presented
Thursday, October 7, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Mumford Room,
sixth floor, Madison Building. The keynote speaker will be the
Honorable Ricardo M. Urbina, District of Columbia Superior Court
Judge.
On Tuesday, October 12, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, Carmen Rivera will
direct a workshop on "Affirming Hispanic Diversity." The workshop
will be in Dining Room A, Madison Building. Seating will be on a
first-come, first-served basis.
The film "Machito" will be shown on Thursday, October 14, from noon
to 1:00 p.m. in the Mary Pickford Theater, with an introduction by
Larry Applebaum.
Friday, October 15, concludes Hispanic Heritage Month festivities
with an "Evening of Culture," celebrating the diversity of
Hispanic, Portuguese, and Caribbean cultures, with music and food.
The event will be held in the Montpelier Room, beginning at 6:00
p.m.
