September 1, 1995Contact: Craig D'Ooge (202) 707-9189French Film Series To Accompany Exhibition of Treasures from the National Library of FranceFrom September through December, the Mary Pickford Theater will present a survey of French cinema in conjunction with a major Library of Congress exhibition of treasures from the French national library. All programs are free and have subtitles in English, but reservations must be made beginning one week before any given show by calling (202) 707-5677 Monday - Friday 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Reserved seats must be claimed at least 10 minutes before showtime, after which standbys will be admitted to unclaimed seats. The Mary Pickford Theater is located on the third floor of the Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. SE. (Capitol South Metro). Capacity is limited to 64 seats. All shows begin at 7 p.m. The film series, "Creating French Cinema," focuses especially on the work of three of the most prominent French filmmakers: Jean Renoir, Sacha Guitry, and Marcel Pagnol. Selected films by other important directors also will be shown, including Rene Clair, Marc and Yves Allegret, Alain Resnais, Luis Bunuel, Jean Vigo, and Maurice Tourneur. A series of four illustrated historical lectures on French filmmakers of the early silent period will be presented by Patrick Loughney, curator of film programs, on October 27, November 3, November 16, and November 30 at 7 p.m. Special funding for this series was provided by M.
