Media Advisory: Bell Atlantic Kicks Off Project with Major Gift to National Digital Library Program

WHERE: Library of Congress Digital Library Visitors' Center, Madison Building, First St. and Independence Ave. S.E.

WHAT: Bell Atlantic announces Project CANDLE (Creating a National Digital Library for Everyone) with a substantial gift to the Library of Congress to help fund the National Digital Library Program.

Bell Atlantic's commitment to enhancing knowledge and educational opportunities for students will be illustrated September 22 during a news conference announcing the Bell Atlantic Project CANDLE and with the presentation of a check to the Library's National Digital Library Program.

Students and teachers from Washington, D.C., and rural Delaware will learn during the news conference how the Library's on-line collections can be useful to them in the classroom.

The Library of Congress is committed to making its digitized collections useful in the education of all Americans. Bell Atlantic, as a leader in the communications field, is equally dedicated to helping the Library attain its goal of digitizing, in collaboration with other institutions, 5 million items by the year 2000.
