Debra McKern Named Chief of Binding Office

Debra McKern was named chief of the Binding Office, effective Sept. 17. She had served as Assistant Binding Officer since she came to the Library in September 1992. "Since Ms. McKern's appointment to the Library, she has brought many innovative approaches to the binding and collections care programs," said Diane Kresh, Director for Preservation, to whom Ms. McKern will report. "She has introduced automated applications to improve efficiencies and has implemented new technologies to provide collection managers with more options in the preservation of their collections."

Ms. McKern began her career at Southern Illinois University as the Collections Maintenance Supervisor, moving through a series of increasingly responsible positions until she was appointed in 1985 to the position of Preservation Officer at Emory University, where she oversaw the planning, implementation and coordination of a comprehensive preservation program for the university libraries. She also developed grant proposals, supervised the implementation of a centralized reprographics unit, and served as the project manager for a cooperative preservation project.

While at Emory University, she founded a users council for the National Library Bindery in Georgia and was an adjunct professor in the School of Library and Information Science. She is currently an adjunct professor at Catholic University of America School of Library and Information Science, where she teaches administration.

In 1991, Ms. McKern was selected to participate in the American Library Association (ALA)/U.S. Information Agency Library Fellows Program. She spent one year in Egypt conducting preservation education workshops, surveying collections, assessing environmental conditions, and acting as a consultant.

Ms. McKern has participated in the ALA Research Libraries Group and the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, as well as in standard-setting activities. She currently chairs the ALA Preservation and Reformatting Section's Books and Paper Committee. Since 1991, she has served on the National Information Standards Organization Library Binding Institute Standards Committee ZZ on Library Binding.
