Blue Note Records President Bruce Lundvall and Guitarist Kenny Burrell To Introduce First Two Jazz Films at the Library of Congress
Bruce Lundvall, president of the Blue Note jazz record label, will introduce the U.S. premiere of the film documentary "DEXTER GORDON: More Than You Know," at the Library of Congress on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. This is the first program in the Library's fourth annual Jazz Film Series, which will continue every Tuesday and Friday evening through Oct. 3.
Mr. Lundvall will share stories and answer questions about his long friendship with Dexter Gordon, the legendary tenor saxophonist who was the Oscar-nominated star of "Round Midnight" and one of the most influential musicians in jazz history.
Jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell will speak and take questions at the Sept. 16 film program devoted to guitarists Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, Laurindo Almeida and Mr. Burrell. Mr. Burrell has made hundreds of recordings with such artists as Billie Holiday, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, and he continues to compose and lead ensembles with equal distinction. He is a professor of music and Director of the Jazz Studies Department at UCLA.
Each of the free programs, which will include three 30-minute television performances, will be introduced by a noted musician, critic or broadcaster. All of the programs will be held in the Pickford Theater, third floor of the Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E. Seating is limited, and admission is first-come, first-served. Doors to the theater will open at 6:30 p.m.
