1997 National Film Registry Picks To Be Announced by Librarian of Congress

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington will announce the 1997 selections for the National Film Registry at a press conference at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, in the Librarian's Reception Room, Room LJ 119, 1st floor, N.W. corner of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. SE.

At the press conference, representatives of the Association of Moving Image Archivists, meeting in Washington from November 17-22, also will announce new initiatives for film preservation. Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act of 1992, each year the Librarian of Congress, with advice from the National Film Preservation Board, names 25 films to the National Film Registry. The films are chosen because they are judged to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically" significant.
