Winner of First John W. Kluge Prize of $1 Million To Be Announced on Nov. 5
WHAT: Librarian of Congress James H. Billington announces the winner of the first John W. Kluge Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
WHEN: Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m.
WHERE: Whittall Pavilion, ground floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First Street S.E., Washington, D.C.
WHO: The winner will be present at the news conference when the announcement is made and will formally accept the $1 million prize in a ceremony in the Great Hall of the Jefferson Building later that evening.
ABOUT THE PRIZE
Through the generosity of John W. Kluge, founding chairman of the James Madison Council, the Library's private sector advisory body, the Library offers for the first time this recurring major award for lifetime achievement in the humanities and social sciences. The Kluge Prize will reward lifetime achievement in the wide range of disciplines not covered by the Nobel prizes, including history, philosophy, politics, anthropology, sociology, religion, criticism in the arts and humanities, and linguistics. The recipient of the Kluge Prize may be of any nationality and write in any language.
