MEDIA ADVISORY
"On the Cutting Edge: Contemporary Japanese Prints," Exhibition of New Acquisitions Starts March 29
WHAT: "On the Cutting Edge: Contemporary Japanese Prints" will feature 212 fine prints from the College Women’s Association of Japan (CWAJ) Print Show. The exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of the CWAJ Print Show and celebrates the donation of the show’s prints to the collections of the Library of Congress.
This important acquisition will bring a fresh infusion of contemporary work to the Library, updating its superb collection of Japanese prints from the Edo Period to the 20th century.
An annual event in Tokyo since 1956, the CWAJ show is a renowned venue for contemporary Japanese creative print art, known as hanga. A jury of leading Japanese art curators selected the 50th anniversary show prints and included both emerging printmakers and such long-established artists as Toko Shinoda, Fumio Kitaoka and Reika Iwami. Non-Japanese creators include Clifton Karhu, Daniel Kelly and Joel Stewart.
WHEN: Thursday, March 29, 2007, to Saturday, June 30, 2007, 10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Free and open to the public.
WHERE: The Northwest Gallery on the second floor of the Library's Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First Street S.E., Washington, D.C. For maps and directions, visit www.loc.gov/loc/maps/.
