Veterans History Project Spotlights Vets of the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine "They Also Served," is a website feature that comprises a dozen first-person accounts of those who went to sea to transport troops, deliver vital supplies, protect our shores, and patrol enemy waters. "The service and sacrifice of the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine veterans are often overlooked," said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. "Having their recollections among the over 65,000 individual stories in the VHP collection enriches our archive for researchers and scholars, and these personal accounts are never forgotten."

Veterans History Project Spotlights Disabled Veterans in “The Unhealed Wounds” Some wounds of war never heal, an ever-present reminder of wartime service for those veterans who bear the physical and emotional scars. For these disabled veterans, the challenges of daily living are great, but many persevere, secure in the belief that their sacrifice was worthwhile.

Veterans History Project Recounts Drama of Helicopters, Ingenuity of Crews For nearly 60 years, helicopters have played an increasingly important role in American combat operations. Vertical takeoff and landing and the ability to hover gave helicopters a distinct advantage in the difficult terrains of Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq. The presentation illustrates how helicopter crews have served their country with inventiveness as well as distinction, whether to deliver troops or firepower, rescue downed pilots, evacuate seriously wounded soldiers, or scout potential fields of battle.

Veterans History Project Spotlights Stories of WWII 92nd Infantry Division The 92nd Division, an all-African-American unit in World War II nicknamed the "Buffalo Soldiers," distinguished itself on the battlefields of Italy and earned an honored chapter in our nation’s history. Two years after the war ended, President Harry Truman signed an order to desegregate the U.S. Armed Forces. VHP commemorates Veterans Day on Nov. 11 and National Veterans Awareness Week, Nov. 9-15, with a special Web presentation featuring the firsthand recollections of soldiers from the 92nd Infantry Division of World War II.

Library of Congress Oral History Project Challenges Americans To Interview Vets During National Veterans Awareness Week 2008 Ceremonies, Events Across the Nation Mark Veterans Day and National Veterans Awareness Week - The Veterans History Project (VHP) at the Library of Congress American Folklife Center issues a challenge for Americans to interview veterans from their families or communities during National Veterans Awareness Week, Nov. 9-15, and throughout the year. Interview guidelines are available online at www.loc.gov/vets.

Veterans History Project Observes Memorial Day 2008 The Veterans History Project (VHP) of the Library of Congress American Folklife Center plans several activities and events for Memorial Day 2008, including the Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. in support of the White House Commission on Remembrance. Larry Minear, former director of the Humanitarianism and War Project at the Feinstein International Center at Tufts University, will deliver the findings of the Tufts study on "The U.S. Citizen-Soldier and the Global War on Terror: The National Guard Experience" at noon on Tuesday, May 20, in the National Digital Library Learning Center, first floor of the Library’s James Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave., S.E., Washington, D.C.

Veterans History Project Presents "Women of Four Wars"Calls Americans to Interview Female Vets During Women's History Month. The Veterans History Project, a program of the Library of Congress American Folklife Center, commemorates Women’s History Month with a special Web presentation spotlighting female veterans. "Women at War " Celebrates Women's History Month
March 1, 2007 -- “Women at War” covers four wars, beginning with World War II, the first conflict in which American women appeared in uniform in all branches of the armed forces. The collection of stories includes nurses like Frances Liberty, who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, and Jeanne Urbin Markle, who served with her husband in Vietnam. Other stories feature civilian codebreakers, a flight surgeon, and two history makers.

Veterans History Project Celebrates Women's History Month with Film Series on Women at War
February 22, 2007 -- Women are among the millions of Americans who have served their country in wartime. Their contributions will be celebrated during Women’s History Month with a film series titled "Women at War," sponsored by the Library of Congress Veterans History Project within the American Folklife Center.
