Library of Congress Vision Statement on Diversity
The Library is a global institution that values, protects, and respects its mission and its employees through a culture that is inclusive and empowers its staff to achieve maximum potential for the betterment of current and future generations.
Library of Congress Policy on Diversity
The Library of Congress is committed to the concept of diversity, including the promotion of diversity at all levels of operation and within its collections. Each employee contributes a unique set of characteristics that include skills, talents, interests, religion, values, life experiences, heritage, physical attributes, and ethnicity. The Library draws upon the richness of these differences in order to provide optimum services to Congress and to the Nation.
Diversity is an active, dynamic force that helps individuals learn more about others and emphasizes the value of each person's uniqueness. Harnessing this force for the benefit of the Library will result in an enriched pool of ideas and approaches that will promote the Library's success in fulfilling its mission, as well as provide a supportive environment for continuous personal and professional growth.
In order to further its goals of recognizing and promoting diversity, the Library needs to adopt and enforce policies supporting it. These include:
1. Ensuring that all Library staff are treated with courtesy, respect, and dignity by managers and fellow workers.
2. Establishing education and training programs to foster communication with others and respect for their unique values and contributions.
3. Including individuals of diverse background in policymaking.
4. Implementing employment practices that give a fair chance to all, regardless of cultural and ethnic background, religion, physical abilities, gender, sexual orientation, age, or race.
5. Ensuring that the Library's collections reflect the rich diversity of the Nation and the world --The current DAC has adopted, and amended this Diversity Statement, which was developed by the DAC on September 11, 1996.
