History

The Library of Congress occupies three massive structures on Capitol Hill, near the U.S. Capitol––the Jefferson Building, the Adams Building and the Madison Building. About two million researchers, scholars, and tourists visit the Library of Congress each year and millions more use its services.

It all began over two hundred years ago, when the Library of Congress was established as the fledgling legislature of the new Republic prepared to move from Philadelphia to the new capital city of Washington.
