Work Place Environment

The employees of the Library of Congress are our most valuable resource. The Library works to provide a safe and stimulating work environment where the professional growth of employees is a priority.

Education, personal motivation and career development are highly valued, resulting in over 70% of Library of Congress staff having a bachelors degree or higher. Employee growth and diversity is embraced and encouraged through numerous programs such as affirmative action tuition support, affirmative action bridge internships, employee assistance, mentoring, leadership development, the disability employment program, college internship and fellowship programs, and many others. The Library also presents a year around series of world-class historical exhibitions, literary and artistic lectures, folk life musical programs, chamber music recitals and more, which employees may attend.

We recognize the importance of balancing work, family, and personal life. In order to better achieve this balance, many offices offer alternative work schedules including flextime, compflex, credit hours, and compensatory time off. Competitive wage and benefits packages are available including long-term health care insurance, a thrift-savings plan, generous retirement program, paid leave, incentive awards, family-friendly leave programs, and paid holidays.

It is the policy of the Library of Congress to ensure equal employment opportunities and fair and equitable treatment for all employees and applicants for employment regardless of their race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability or sexual orientation.
