Are Fellowships and Internships available at the Library of Congress other than through the Conservation Division?
The Library of Congress offers many student employment opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students. These opportunities are available on a paid and volunteer basis for students pursuing part-time and full-time work schedules. Are there any special benefits or incentives available to Library interns?
Yes, Library interns may be eligible for the following:
*METROCHEK-The Library offers a Transit Fare Subsidy Program whereby Library employees may receive up to $100 per month for cummuting expenses using public transportation.
*STUDENT LOAN REPAYMENT-The Library offers a Student Loan Repayment Program whereby the Library may repay all or part of Federally insured student loans. Although the student loan is not absolved, the Library may make payments to the loan holder up to a maximum of $6,000 for an employee in a calendar year and a total not to exceed $40,000 for any one employee. Employees receiving loan repayments must agree to continue their employment with the Library for a specified period, usually 3 years.
Does the Library of Congress have other paid employment opportunities available other than Internships and Fellowships?
Yes, the Library has other paid employment opportunities for students outside of Internships and Fellowships:
*PART-TIME POSITIONS-Throughout the year, the Library offers part-time (less than 40 hours per week) positions to interested and qualified applicants in professional and other occupational series.
*TEMPORARY POSITIONS-Temporary appointments are available for "project" assignments of time limited duration. Temporary appointments may be made for a period of 6 months and may be extended for an additional 4 months.
*REAPPOINTMENT OF FORMER LIBRARY EMPLOYEES-A former Library staff member may be noncompetitively reappointed provided he/she previously held a permanent or indefinite position at the same or higher grade and promotion potential as the position to which the appointment is being made and the staff member meets the position qualifications.
*SUMMER JOBS-Anyone 16 years and older and a U.S. citizen may apply for a summer job at the Library of Congress. The application period is usually March through May of the current year and the applicant may be placed at any grade for which he/she qualifies.
*PERMANENT JOBS-Full-time employment opportunities are available at the Library of Congress and are advertised through Vacancy Announcements. Anyone may apply for Library of Congress vacancies, but by law, employment at most Federal agencies, including the Library of Congress, is limited to U.S. citizens. However, non-citizens may be hired providing that immigration and other legal requirements are met. Applicants may apply online: www.loc.gov (click on job/fellowships).
