Paul Sybrowsky of Ameritech Library Services, who was primarily responsible for organizing the donation to the Library of the $2 million that is funding the LC/Ameritech competition, visited the Library on April 30, 1997. The slides here were used for a brief presentation in non-technical terms on some of the challenges associated with the "journey" towards distributed digital libraries, and how the competition can help the library community take some steps forward on that journey. [The "journey" metaphor had been suggested by Paul Sybrowsky earlier and provided an excellent transition into the presentation.]
The slideshow is presented through the "page-turning" interface that David Woodward developed for American Memory materials that are available only as page-images of text, such as programs and playbills in the Variety Stage Collection. Rather than creating a hand-coded HTML page for each image, I simply converted my PowerPoint slides to GIFs (saving each slide in WMF format and converting & resizing using PaintShop Pro) and created a small file with one line per slide to serve as the page-turning "database." Many thanks to Dave for making this possible. CRA
