Subject Headings
Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:
H 1147, Animals
$x Development $x Endocrine aspects
$x Larvae $xEndocrinology
Other decisions:
Chinese--Malaysia--Study and teaching
Since the subdivsion --Study and teaching is authorized to be further divided by place, a geographic subdivision may not be interposed between the heading Chinese and the subdivision --Study and teaching. The item should be cataloged using an appropriate combination of existing headings, such as Chinese--Study and teaching--Malaysia, Chinese--Malaysia, and Malaysia--Study and teaching. The proposal was not approved.
Historic roads and trails
There are more than twenty existing headings for specific historic trails or highways that have been assigned the BT Trails--[place] or Roads--[place]. This proposal may be resubmitted together with proposals to change the BT on those headings to Historic roads and trails--[place]. When it is resubmitted, the proposed UF Roads, Historic and UF Trails, Historic should be removed since they violate the rule given in H 373, sec. 2. The RT Scenic byways should also be removed since it violates the rule in H 370, sec. 2 against linking two headings as related terms if they have a common broader term.
Piano--Methods (Jazz, [Rock, Bluegrass, etc.]); Piano--Studies and exercises (Jazz, [Rock, Bluegrass, etc.])
These two multiple subdivisions have been cancelled and are being replaced by individual subdivisions established under the pattern heading Piano. H 1161 will be revised to include a complete list of these valid subdivisions. The revision of H 1161 will appear in the next update to the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings, which will be published in the autumn of this year.
Transportation--Subsidies
The heading Transportation is very broad and includes all forms of transportation, such as airlines, railroads, ships, mass transit, automobiles, etc. Some of the UF references that have been proposed under this heading seem to refer specifically to mass transit. The LC subject heading for mass transit is Local transit, not Transportation. Consideration should be given to establishing the heading Local transit--Subsidies in addition to, or instead of, the heading Transportation--Subsidies, so that the references can be made to the appropriate heading and so that the affected bibliographic records can be correctly updated. The proposal may be resubmitted.
