Classification
Changes were made as indicated on the approved list.
Subject Headings
Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:
H 1156, Literatures
$x Bangladeshi authors
Other decisions:
Aliens CANCEL Aliens (Persons); Extraterrestrial beings
The meeting did not approve revising the existing heading Aliens to "Aliens (Persons)" because the change was not felt to be worth the considerable effort needed to achieve it. In addition to revising the basic authority record for Aliens and updating all bibliographic records, such a change would involve revising fifteen subdivisions established under Aliens and the records for at least seventeen headings that are linked to it by references. To avoid confusion, the meeting revised the proposal to establish a new heading in the form "Aliens (Extraterrestrials)" to the approved form Extraterrestrial beings.
Cathedrals, Medieval; Church buildings, Medieval
The meeting did not approve establishing headings for "Cathedrals, Medieval" and "Church buildings, Medieval" and setting a precedent of establishing headings for types of buildings qualified by time period. Instead, headings for types of buildings should be assigned in conjunction with headings of the type Architecture, Baroque; Architecture, Gothic; Architecture, Medieval; Architecture, Romanesque, etc.
Human smuggling
The meeting did not approved adding a BT reference "Emigration and immigration law--Criminal provisions" on the heading Human smuggling because that reference would not be in accord with the guidelines on making references that are outlined in instruction sheet H 370 of the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings.
