June 3, 2009

Present from PSD: L. Dechman, R. Goudreau

Classification

Changes were made as indicated on the approved list.

Subject Headings

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

H 1180, Plants

$x Seedlings $x Diseases and pests

Other decisions:

Action research in museum techniques

The meeting feels that this heading would not be useful for cataloging purposes. The existing headings, Action research post-coordinated with Museum techniques may be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.

Historic kitchens

The meeting feels that it would be inadvisable to establish parts of houses as "historic" features. The existing headings Kitchens post-coordinated with Historic buildings may be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.

Living Desert State Park (N.M.)

This park is both a state park and a zoo. The web site for this park identifies it as a zoo, accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. The heading should be established conforming to the conventions for zoos. In the Subject Headings Manual, H 405, zoos are in Group One and should be established as name headings. The proposal was not approved.

Religious warfare

A heading in the form Religious warfare would indicate a way that war is waged, analogous to headings such as Jungle warfare and Submarine warfare, and is not appropriate. However a heading for the concept of religious war would be useful, and should be considered. The meeting suggests proposing a heading in the form Religious war; the heading should be supported by citations from reference sources appropriate to the topic. Works about the concept of religious war, to which this heading would be assigned, should also be noted. The proposal should also include at least one BT, and additional change proposals should be made for any other headings that should be NTs or RTs (e.g. Jihad). Finally, the meeting believes that the inclusion of a scope note is advisable, to clarify the use and meaning of the heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Survivor research

The meaning of this heading is unclear. A scope note should be added to clarify its meaning. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Two thousand two, A.D.

According to the instructions in the Subject Headings Manual, H 620, section 2.c., a specific year heading is not assigned when the work has a topical focus. The work being cataloged is about 21st century politics and the appropriate heading World politics--21st century has been assigned to it. The proposal was not approved.
