Back to Summary of Decisions

March 17, 2010

PSD policy specialist responsible for this weekly list: L. Dechman

Classification

LD5755.A-Z; LD5755.D46; [LD5755.H87]; LD5755.R6

Names of individual college buildings have traditionally
not been explicitly included in the L schedule. Cutters are created for
them in the shelflist as needed. The meeting did not wish to change
this practice, since most individual universities and colleges are
controlled by tables in the L schedule, and in order to list individual
buildings it would be necessary to add a table modification to the
schedule in each case. The proposals therefore were not approved.

Subject Headings

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

H 1156, Literatures

$x Romanian authors

          Other decisions:

Bible stories, English--N.T. John

This construction is free-floating according to the note
under the heading Bible stories. The proposal was not necessary.

Foreign countries

This proposal was made to add “nationalities” to the
scope note for the heading Foreign countries. The Subject Headings Manual (SHM), H 1103, explicitly states that “ethnic groups” includes “nationalities,” so the 360s and 680s do not normally mention both. The proposal was not necessary.

Montana, Northwest

The SHM, H 760 1.e.6 states that a named region should
be established only if the region in question is well-defined and generally recognized by that name in English-language reference sources.  There was no support for establishment of the name in reference sources, and Web sites that were consulted did not agree about which counties were included in the area. The proposal therefore was not approved.

Swedish literature--21st century

The subdivision --21st century is free-floating under Literatures (see SHM H 1156). The proposal was not necessary.
