Subject Headings
High school students
A UF reference of the type [… schools]--Students has almost never been created on headings for groups of students, and the meeting feels that changing long-standing practice is not warranted. There are a few other headings with similar UFs, but in those cases, the heading and the UF begin with different words, e.g. College students has the UF Universities and colleges--Students, so the UF is appropriate in those situations. The proposal to add the UF High schools--Students was not approved.
Islands of the Gulf of California (Mexico)
The Subject Headings Manual, H 807, sec. 1.c. states that “Islands of the …” headings are established for only groups in oceans and seas. Gulfs do not apply, as shown in the example. The heading Islands--Mexico--Gulf of California should be used instead. The proposal was not approved.
Carmen Island (Baja California Sur, Mexico); Cerralvo Island (Mexico); Tiburon Island (Mexico)
These proposals were made solely to add the BT Islands of the Gulf of California (Mexico) to the headings. The proposals were not approved.
Mammalogical literature
A heading of the type [topic] literature would be used for a general discussion of the literature of the discipline. The work being cataloged appears to be a bibliography of the literature of Mammalogy rather than a discussion of that literature. The heading Mammology--Bibliography should be used instead, and therefore, the proposal was not approved. If the proposing institution feels that the heading is appropriate for the material being cataloged, the proposal may be resubmitted.
Werdmuller Centre (Cape Town, South Africa)
Shopping centers should be established as name headings according to SHM, H 405, Group 1. The subject heading proposal was not approved.
