CLASSIFICATION

B1298.R24

John Locke’s writings on non-philosophical topics are classified with the topic.  The work being cataloged, which is on Locke’s and Hume’s views on slavery, racism, and colonialism, should be classified in HT.  The proposal was not approved.

B2424.G63

General works on good and evil should be classified in BJ1404. The proposal was not approved.

B3636.M53-.M534

Ermanno Migliorini is a philosopher of aesthetics and should be classified in BH221.A-Z, aesthetics by region or country. The proposal was not approved.

BR1720.F38

The span BR1720.A-Z is for individual biographies, and the names of individual biographees do not need to be printed (see CSM F 350 sec. 2). The proposal was not necessary.

BS315.H24

Halia is a Papua New Guinean language, and the note at BS315.A-Z states, “For languages of the Philippines and the island of New Guinea see BS335.A-Z.” Halia is already established at BS335.H22. The proposal was not necessary.

BV2628.H56

The work being cataloged is about Christian converts in the province of Bali. The note at BV2618.A-Z, above BV2628.A-Z in the hierarchy, states, “Class here works about the United States; class works about other countries with the country.” This work should be classified in BV3340. The proposal was not necessary.

BX4705.D4823

The span BX4705.A-Z is for individual biographies, and the names of individual biographees do not need to be printed (see CSM F 350 sec. 2). The proposal was not necessary.

F1502

The meeting does not wish to classify general encyclopedias about Honduras with gazetteers, geographic dictionaries, and other works about geographic names in Honduras. The encyclopedia should be classified in F1503, the general works number for Honduras. The proposal was not approved.

G156.5.P65

The work being cataloged is chiefly about the political aspects of tourism in Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy. The political aspects of travel are covered by the span G154.9-155.8, Travel and state. The work should be classified in G155.8.A-Z, travel and state by region or country. The proposal was not necessary.

PN3377.5.H86

Works on the authorship of humor are classified at PN6149.A88.  A cross-reference to PN6149.A88 will be provided in PN3377.5.A-Z. The proposal was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Announcements:

Earth (Planet); Globes

This list includes the proposals to revise the heading for the planet Earth from Earth to Earth (Planet).  It also includes changes to the treatment of globes in both LCSH and LCGFT. The meaning of the term Globes has been broadened to mean globes of any celestial sphere and the LCSH form subdivision –Globes has been cancelled. For more information on these revisions, see the announcement at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/genre_form_globes_final.pdf.

Indian place names (from List 1, 2013)

List 1 included proposals to revise subject headings in which Bombay, Calcutta, or Madras, India, appeared as a qualifier. The proposals were prompted by a revision to the name authority file, which has been updated to include headings for the current names for those cities: Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai, respectively. According to H 708, Linear Jurisdictional Changes in Name Authority Records, the latest name should be used for subject cataloging purposes.

Other decisions:

Access to higher education

The phrase “access to higher education” may mean many things, including but not limited to: the financial cost (tuition, fees, etc.); admissions requirements; equal opportunity with regard to race, gender, etc.; and barrier-free access for people with disabilities. The work should be assigned the headings appropriate for the specific type of access being discussed (e.g., Education, Higher—Finance; Universities and colleges—Admission; Barrier-free design for students with disabilities, etc.).   The proposal was not approved.

Affect (Psychology) in motion pictures

It does not appear that the work being cataloged is about affect, defined by Merriam-Webster as “the conscious subjective aspect of an emotion considered apart from bodily changes.”  Instead, it seems to be about the ways that motion pictures are processed by individuals, and the emotional responses people have to them. The meeting suggests that the headings Motion pictures—Social aspects and/or Motion pictures—Psychological aspects may be more appropriate. The proposal was not approved.

Anaikatty Region (India)

The work being cataloged refers to the area “around Anaikatty” and to the “Anaikatty area.” Both phrases are ambiguous. The work indicates that Anaikatty is within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Anaikatty does not appear in any of the standard geographic reference sources, but there are several references to a village/town named Anaikatty or Anaikatti in Wikipedia, and several of those articles place it within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. More research should be done to determine whether Anaikatty/Anaikatti should be established as a jurisdiction in the name authority file. If so, then the provisions of SHM H 790 should be applied. If not, then the meeting suggests that headings for the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu be used to bring out the geographic focus of the work. The proposal was not approved.

Archaeological integrity; Archaeological significance

Another commonly used phrase for archaeological integrity is “archaeological site integrity.”  The proposed heading should be reconsidered and this alternate phrase be proposed as either the heading or a UF. Both of the above proposals should include scope notes to define their meaning. Lastly, the BTs on both proposals should be reconsidered. Neither concept appears to be a type of archaeological surveying; both may be better placed as NTs of Archaeology. These proposals may be resubmitted along with the related proposal Archaeological significance—Evaluation.

Blaker herad (Norway)

The source citations provided indicate that Blaker herad is an administrative division of Norway. It should thus be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Cyberbullying—Law and legislation

Cyberbullying is in the Crime hierarchy and this therefore considered inherently legal, making the subdivision –Law and legislation redundant. The proposal was not necessary.

Detective and mystery stories, African (French)

This proposal was made to add a BT Detective and mystery stories, African to the existing heading. This BT does not follow the well-established pattern for literature. The proposal was not approved.

English drama (Comedy)

This proposal was made to remove the “former heading” reference English drama (Comedy)—Restoration, 1660-1700 from this record and place it on the new proposal for Comedies of manners, English. The source citations provided in the latter proposal indicate that while comedies of manners were popular during the Restoration, they experienced a revival in the nineteenth century. Therefore, the UF is most appropriate on the heading English drama (Comedy). The proposal was not approved. (The proposal for Comedies of manners, English, was approved with the above-noted revision.)

Expressionist drama; Expressionist drama, American; Expressionist drama, German; Expressionist drama, Swedish

To date, works about expressionist drama have been assigned two headings: Expressionism in literature and the appropriate heading for the drama (e.g., German drama—20th century—History and criticism). Several dozen bibliographic records will need to be updated if these proposals are approved, but no BFM was submitted.  The proposals may be resubmitted with BFM.

Historical fiction, Singaporean (Malay)

The work cataloged appears to be a novel, to which qualified form headings may not be assigned (see SHM H 1790). The proposal was not necessary.

Linde xin nian bei

This landscape design competition should be established in the name authority file (see SHM H 405 Group 1). The proposal was not approved.

Luoyuan Bay (China)

Geonet provides several variant names, but was not cited (see SHM H 690 for research requirements for geographic proposals). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Macaire, Robert (Fictitious character)

It appears that the work being cataloged is an individual drama featuring Robert Macaire, and evidence that the character has been featured in two or more additional works was not provided. The nature of the work being cataloged leads the meeting to wonder if the introduction includes extensive critical material. If that is the case, then the cataloger is requested to provide information to that effect in the proposal. Otherwise, the character must appear in three or more independent works. The proposal may be resubmitted with evidence that it meets the requirements for establishing fictitious character headings.

Made-for-TV movies

This proposal was made to add a UF Telepix to the existing heading. Telepix does not seem to be a commonly used synonym for made-for-TV movies. There are over 30,800 hits on Google for the term, but the first several pages of hits refer to a corporation called Telepix. The proposal was not approved.

Military ribbon bars

Military ribbon bars are worn on dress uniforms and represent the medals that are worn on the dressiest uniforms at the most formal occasions. Since there does not appear to be a difference between a military ribbon bar and a military decoration or medal – in terms of their meaning or significance – the meeting does not wish to establish a separate heading for the ribbon bars. Military medals is a UF on Military decorations, and a UF Military ribbon bars will be added to that heading. The proposal was not approved.

Monsters in fantasy games

There is no precedent in LCSH for headings of the type [topic] in fantasy games, and the meeting does not wish to establish one. The work may be cataloged by post-coordinating the headings Monsters and Fantasy games. The proposal was not approved.

Montana (Trademark)

The current holder of this trademark is Montana alimentari SpA, and the meeting believes that having a subject heading for the trademark as well as a name heading for the corporate body could be confusing. The work seems to be sufficiently cataloged using the corporate name heading post-coordinated with the subject heading Meat industry and trade—Italy. The proposal was not approved.

Nigg (Scotland : Parish)

Scottish parishes are administrative subdivisions and should be established in the name authority file. Nigg has been established as Nigg (Aberdeenshire, Scotland : Parish) [LCCN n 91073584]. The proposal was not approved.

Post-apocalypse

The work being cataloged is an issue of a comic book serial, and SHM H 1430 states that only historical or biographical comic books, or animal stories, should be assigned subject headings. The meeting advises that Apocalyptic films and Apocalyptic television programs, with UFs from Post-apocalyptic films and Post-apocalyptic television programs, respectively, have been established in LCGFT. This precedent may be sufficient to establish a genre/form term for apocalyptic comic books after the literature terms are added to LCGFT. The proposal was not approved.

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (London, England)

This heading does not represent a park in the traditional sense, since the park consists of several sporting venues, housing and amenities for Olympic athletes, etc.; housing developments, neighborhoods, a technology hub, and a university are all planned for the space.  The meeting believes that the nature of the area makes the heading better suited to the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Sibun River (Belize)

Geonet was cited in the proposal, but incompletely; the variant forms were not provided. The proposal may be resubmitted with a complete Geonet citation and UFs for the variant forms.  The related proposal for the Subun Valley may be resubmitted at the same time.

Social realism in the arts

The Summary of Decisions for List 26 of 2011 stated, “The heading Social realism is defined as an artistic style, therefore, the proposed heading Social realism in the arts would be redundant.  The proposal was not approved.”

Stealth warships

This proposal included two UFs, neither of which were supported in the citations. It appears that they may have simply been copied from the pattern heading cited, Stealth airships. The other UFs on Stealth airships were not copied over, however. Formulaic UFs (e.g., the inverted references for classes of persons that are qualified by American ethnic groups) should be copied when making new proposals, but substantive ones, such as those on this proposal, should be supported in citations.  The proposal may be resubmitted with support for the UFs proposed.

Streltsy

According to the citations provided, Streltsy was an elite military unit formed by Ivan the Terrible. It should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Yawalapiti Indians

There is an 053 provided in the subject proposal, but the classification number has not been proposed, as is required. The subject proposal may be resubmitted along with a classification proposal.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Made-for-TV movies

This proposal was made to add a UF Telepix to the existing heading. Telepix does not seem to be a commonly used synonym for made-for-TV movies. There are over 30,800 hits on Google for the term, but the first several pages of hits refer to a corporation called Telepix. The proposal was not approved.
