CLASSIFICATION
DF221.I66
The work being cataloged for which this proposal was made is "Foundation myths and politics in ancient Ionia." Ionia is chiefly in Turkey, the Ionian Islands are in Greece, therefore, the work cat should class in DS156.I6. The proposal was not approved.
LG221.C343
The reference at the top of the LG hierarchy says: "For individual institutions limited to education in a special field, see the topic…." Teacher training in universities and colleges is classed in LB2165-LB2278, by individual institution in a country. This institution should be classed in LB2256 (Philippines) instead. No proposal was necessary.
LG221.M2644
This number was proposed for the Graduate School of Arellano University. The same number should be used for both the university and its graduate school. This work should be classed in LG221.M264, which is a number for Arellano University that was approved on this list. The proposal was not approved.
N1935.F75
This museum is in Copenhagen, which has a special development in this area of the schedule: N1910-1930. Therefore, the proposed number should be N1930.F+. The proposal may be resubmitted.
PQ6273.A25
António de Almeida is a Portuguese playwright who wrote in Spanish. The classification number for him should be established in PQ7030-7039 (Spanish literature in Portugal). The proposal may be resubmitted.
PT7100
The work being cataloged is about children’s literature throughout the world. It is not a collection of children’s literature in Scandinavian languages. The work should class in PN1009.A1 instead. The proposal was not approved.
SUBJECT HEADINGS
Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:
H 1147, Animals
$x Parasites $x Life cycles $x Climatic factors
H 1158, Materials
$x Imaging
Other decisions:
Alameda (Monterrey, Mexico)
The work being cataloged is about the Alameda Mariano Escobedo, for which a heading already exists: Alameda Mariano Escobedo (Monterrey, Mexico) (sh 88007870). The proposal was not approved.
City sections; Sections, City
“City sections” is a term used in cataloging documentation, not a term in common use. The 260 is a laundry list of types of city sections along with a standard alternate instruction to use names of individual city sections. The proposals were not approved.
Cookie icings
There is no difference between cookie icings and cake icings. Therefore, the existing heading Icings, Cake will be changed to Icings (Confectionery). The proposal was not approved.
Cooking, Mahoran
Before a people name or ethnic group can be used as a qualifier, the name or group should be established. The current proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the people group.
Cuihu guo jia cheng shi shi di gong yuan
There is no documentation provided on the proposal that supports addition of the UF “Cuihu national urban wetland park (China)” or the UF “Guihu shi di gong yuan (China). To have an English form for parks, the English form needs to be found, not constructed (see SHM H 1925 sec. 1.b.) Also, the English form of the name seems to imply that the park is nationally administered. If so, then the proposed heading should have a BT National parks and reserves--China. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Dabieshan Ziran Baohuqu (China)
There is no documentation provided on the proposal that supports addition of the UF “Dabieshan Nature Reserve (China)” or the UF “Henan Da bie shan Ziran Baohuqu (China),” nor is there documentation that supports the BT Wetlands--China. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Derry family
According to the Dictionary of American family names, Derry is a variant of Deery, for which a heading already exists. Derry family will be added as a UF on Deery family (sh 85036408). The proposal was not approved.
Goldmine River (Ireland)
Geonet lists multiple variants, which were not included in the record. A BT should be included in the proposal (see SHM H 690, sec. 10.b.). The Google citation on this proposal: Google, March 18, 2013 $b (Gold Mines River, Croghan Kinshela Mountain, Co. Wicklow, Ireland) should cite the page found, not just the search engine, so that the found information can be verified. The proposal, enhanced by the requested information, may be resubmitted.
Human rights film festivals
There is no precedent for establishing headings of the type [topic] film festivals, and the meeting chooses not to begin the pattern. Two headings should be assigned instead: Human rights in motion pictures and Film festivals. The proposal was not approved.
Kingdoms
This heading is not appropriate for the work being cataloged, which is about the history of nation-states. A UF Kingdom (Monarchy) will be added to the existing heading Monarchy. The proposal was not approved.
Krypton (Imaginary place); Nipper (Fictitious character); Wendy the Good Little Witch (Fictitious character)
These proposals are based solely on comic books. SHM H 1430, sec. 1.a. states that subject headings should not be assigned to comic books, strips, etc. except for biographical fiction, animal stories, and historical fiction. The proposals were not approved.
Lorbetskie family
This family name was changed substantially, from Rolbiecki to Lorbetskie, due to immigration. According to SHM H 1631 sec. 3.c., when a family name has changed substantially due to immigration, two headings should be established and linked as RTs. The proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for Rolbiecki family.
Organisational…; Organisations
Some British-spelling UFs are already provided in LCSH. Also, there are several other variant endings for “Organis…”, depending on the part of speech. If a reference of this sort is desired, then each heading should have an explicit UF. The proposals were not approved.
Perovskite
This proposal was made to add an RT Calcium titanate. Calcium titanate occurs in nature as the mineral perovskite. The meeting does not wish to begin making RTs from chemicals to their mineral forms. The proposal was not approved.
Perovskite oxides
There is no precedent for establishing category headings of the type [specific mineral] oxides (or fluorides, or nitrates, etc.), and the meeting chooses not to begin the pattern. Instead, assign a heading for the mineral postcoordinated with headings such as Oxide minerals, Fluoride minerals, Nitrate minerals, etc. The proposal was not approved.
Phonograph turntable music; Turntablism
The concept “phonograph turntable music” is the same concept as the existing heading Turntablism. The proposals were not approved.
Phonograph turntables as musical instruments
In the past, headings of this type were established, but a recent change to the SHM has changed the policy. The current policy, in SHM H 1918 sec. 3, states: “When it is appropriate to establish a heading for music written for a non-musical object so that the object can be used as a medium of performance in a bibliographic record, in addition to creating a heading for the music of the object, also create a general see reference for the object to demonstrate how it may be used.” A proposal for the general see reference may be submitted. This proposal was not approved.
Poland--Social life and customs--1980-1989
SHM H 2057 sec. 2 states, "Establish new subdivisions for other significant periods, usually covering forty years or more, under headings of the type [place]–Social life and customs where there is sufficient material to warrant it." Also, SHM H 620 sec. 3.d.(2), states, “Select a period of time that expresses a generally recognized period related to the subject or place as shown by authority research or a period of time frequently treated in works on the subject or place.”
This proposal cites only a work cat, which is in Polish, as justification. The proposal provides no evidence that these were recognized watershed years in Polish social life and customs. No bib. records were identified for BFM, which would provide evidence that the time period was treated frequently in works on the place. Additionally, the --Social life and customs chronological divisions often do not correspond to the --History divisions.
The proposal was not approved.
Qiandao Lake (China)
There is no documentation provided on the proposal that supports addition of the UFs “Qiandaohu (China)” and “Xin’anjiang Shuiku (China).” The proposal, enhanced by the requested supporting information, may be resubmitted.
Refractory metals; Molybdenum; Niobium
The term “refractory metals” is an existing UF on the heading Heat reisitant alloys. The proposals were not approved.
Scottish poetry--21st century
SHM H 1156 sec. I, states that the subdivision --21st century is free-floating under major literary genres. The proposal was not necessary.
Water film festivals
There is no precedent for establishing headings of the type [topic] film festivals, and the meeting chooses not to begin the pattern. Two headings should be assigned instead: Water in motion pictures and Film festivals. The proposal was not approved.
GENRE/FORM TERMS
Announcement:
Moratorium on derivative genre/form terms based on literary forms
LCGFT includes several authorized “derivative” moving image terms that are based on literary forms, including terms such as Filmed monodramas and Televised plays. On Approved List 4 (2013) the meeting also approved Poetry readings (Sound recordings) as a genre/form term. The current list, List 5, included a proposal for Plays (Sound recordings).
Effective with List 5, the meeting has declared a moratorium on proposals for these types of genre/form terms. The reasoning is twofold.
First, the literature terms have not yet been added to LCGFT, and therefore the authorized “base” term has not yet been determined (e.g., Plays v. Drama or Dramas). The derivative term should reflect the literature term, and adding yet more derivative terms increases the likelihood that a significant clean-up project will be required.
Second, until the literature terms are approved it is difficult to determine which concepts should be represented in pre-coordinated strings (e.g., Filmed plays) and which should be post-coordinated instead (e.g., Filmed plays assigned with Passion plays instead of Filmed passion plays?).
Previously approved derivative terms remain valid for use during the moratorium, and the moratorium does not apply to proposals for film, television program, and radio program terms that may parallel literary genres (e.g., Science fiction films; Western television programs; Adventure radio programs).
Other decisions:
Audio tours
The meeting does not wish to begin a pattern of creating headings for every possible type of printed item that can possibly be recorded. Instead, Audiobooks should be post-coordinated with the forthcoming term for guidebooks or tourbooks. The proposal was not approved.
Plays (Sound recordings)
See the announcement “Moratorium on derivative genre/form terms based on literary forms” above. The proposal was not approved at this time.
Sceneggiata films
Sceneggiata is a Neapolitan form of musical. The meeting prefers not to add music genre/form terms before the music project comes in and a judgment can be made on how that project affects LCGFT. The work being cataloged can be assigned Musical films and/or Opera films. The proposal was not approved at this time.
Simulation videos
No evidence was provided that "Simulation videos" is the most common terminology. It is also not clear what "events and processes" would be depicted, that they are all short, or that they are all animated, as described in the scope note. Are flight simulators, driving simulators, and films simulating interviews, interventions, social situations, etc., included? It would be preferable to have an overarching term for all of the types: animated and live action, shorter and longer, etc. The proposal may be resubmitted.
