CLASSIFICATION
BX3493.5
The Discalced Carmelites have traditionally been classed with the Carmelites in BX3201-3256. A note will be added at BX3201-3256, “Including Discalced Carmelites” and a reference from BX3494.5 will be added. The proposal was not necessary.
BX6600.C36-.C368
The Celtic Episcopal Church (U.S.) is not Episcopalian and therefore not Protestant, as this proposal would suggest. It is a Catholic sect that dissents from Rome and is called “episcopal” because it has bishops (episcopos in Greek). The Celtic Episcopal Church (U.S.) should be classed at BX4795.C38, which must be established. The proposal may be resubmitted.
G69.H45
This is an individual biography A-Z number. CSM F 275 sec. 6.b. states: “In general, do not submit proposals to list individual persons under biography numbers in the classification schedules.” The proposal was not necessary.
PG3933.E97
The work being cataloged is a collection of fiction about the Euromaidan protests, which should be classified in PG3940. The proposal was not necessary.
PQ307.I76
The subject headings indicate that the work cat is about irony in fiction. The number proposed is for irony in literature in general. PQ637.I76 should be assigned instead. The proposal was not necessary.
PT148.T69
The meeting determined that the work cat, which is about poetry, music, art, philosophy, and history, would be better classed with arts in general in NX180.T74. A proposal for NX180.T74 was substituted for the proposal PT148.T69.
VM393.L53
The work is about a specific Liberty ship and should be classed in VM395.A-Z. The proposal was not necessary.
SUBJECT HEADINGS
Announcements
H 1103, Ethnic groups
On List 1410 (Oct. 2014) the announcement was made that the subdivision –Industries, which was limited to preliterate peoples, has been deleted from H 1103 and that the individually established LCSH combinations (e.g., Indians of North America—Industries) will be cancelled on a future list.
Pursuant to that announcement, the project to cancel individually established LCSH combinations with the subdivision –Industries, has been completed and the cancellations are published on this list (List 1501).
Other decisions:
88th Police Precinct Station House (New York, N.Y.)
The station house has the same name as the corporate body that inhabits it, therefore, according to SHM H 1334 Background, a single heading should be established in the name authority file, which will serve as the heading for both the building and the corporate body. The proposal was not approved.
Alter Südlicher Friedhof (Munich, Germany)
This cemetery is not an archaeological site. It still functions as a cemetery even though there have been no burials in it since 1867. The meeting decided that the Alter Südlicher Friedhof should be established in the name authority file per SHM H 405 Group One, footnote under “Cemeteries.” The proposal was not approved.
Bhagwan Mahavir National Park (India)
No research was recorded in a 670 field to support this proposal. The website for Goa’s Department of Tourism refers to the Bhagwan Manavir Wildlife Sanctuary, and other websites refer to the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary as well as to the “Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park.” Research needs to be done to determine if any of these entities is the park being proposed, the correct formal name should be identified, and references need to be made for the variants. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Burundian literature
This proposal was made to provide a broader term for the proposed heading Burundian literature (French). However, the broader term for that heading should be Burundi—Literatures, which already exists in LCSH. The proposal was not necessary.
Chronology, Persian
In LCSH, “Persian” is used to represent language, and “Iranian” (or the geographic subdivision Iran) is used to represent nationality, derivation, or location (see the general see reference “Persian …”). In Chronology, [qualifier] headings, the qualifier represents nationality, so, the heading should be Chronology, Iranian, which is an existing heading. The proposal was not necessary.
Classroom animals
The work cat is a 2-page PDF form that children can fill out to “adopt a classroom animal.” If a subject heading were assigned to this form, the existing heading Pet adoption would be most appropriate. Other works cited in the proposal were adequately cataloged (in LCDB) using the headings Zoology—Study and teaching (Middle school) and Zoology—Study and teaching (Elementary).
The meeting concluded that proposed heading is not appropriate for the works being cataloged. The proposal was not necessary.
Clywedog Valley (Wales)
A proposal for the river should be submitted at the same time as the proposal for the valley (SHM H 800 sec. 8) if the name of the valley is based on the name of the river, and if the river is not yet established. There is an incomplete proposal (sp 2014002863) in the Proposal System, input by the same library, which appears to be the beginning of a proposal for the river. The proposing library should complete and submit that proposal for the river, at which time the proposal for the valley may be resubmitted.
Dragon Rally
The Dragon Rally is a recurring, organized sporting event with a formal name, and as such, a heading for it should be established in the name authority file (per SHM H 1592 Background, 2nd paragraph). The proposal was not approved.
Folk songs, Kalmyk
The proposal sought to make the headings Folk songs, Oirat and Folk songs, Kalmyk related terms. The qualifiers on the headings, Oirat and Kalmyk, refer to the language of the songs. The Oirat language and the Kalmyk language are already related terms, therefore, it was not necessary to make songs in those languages related as well.
Followership—Religious aspects
The work being cataloged is all about leadership, and is adequately cataloged with Leadership—Religious aspects. The proposal was not necessary.
Harvard Yard (Cambridge, Mass.)
The proposal seeks to remove the BT Plazas and replace it with Courtyards, however, Harvard Yard is a plaza and not a courtyard. From Merriam-Webster dictionary:
Plaza: an open area located near urban buildings and often featuring pedestrian walkways, trees, places to sit, and sometimes shops; def. 2: a public square in a city or town.
Courtyard: a court or enclosure adjacent to or attached to a house, castle, palace, or other building; specifically, a service area adjoining an apartment building, hotel, or commercial structure.
The proposal was not approved.
Robert Gould Shaw Memorial (Boston, Mass.)
PSD has an on-going project to move individual works of art from the subject file to the name file. This sculpture should be established in the name authority file as an individual work of art and the subject heading should be cancelled. A cancellation proposal may be resubmitted.
Robert Gould Shaw Memorial (Washington, D.C.)
This sculpture should be established in the name authority file as an individual work of art. The proposal was not approved.
Tlazolteotl (Aztec deity)
As of July 2013, names of individual deities are established in the name authority file according to RDA instructions (see SHM H 1635). The proposal was not approved.
Coatlicue (Aztec deity)
Instead of removing the UF, the cataloger should establish the deity in the name authority file and propose that the subject heading be cancelled. The cancellation proposal may be resubmitted.
Topolnita Cave (Romania)
There was no BT provided, and there is nothing in the record to indicate whether this is an archaeological site or just a regular geographic feature. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Women in tourism
“Tourist industry” is an acknowledged variant (UF) on Tourism, so, it is not necessary to add the UF Women in the tourist industry onto the heading Women in tourism. The proposal was not approved.
