PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: J. Young

CLASSIFICATION

DS70.8.J48

Works on the history of Jews outside Israel should be classified in DS135.A-Z, not with the country of their residence. This work on the history of Jews in Iraq should be classified in DS135.I7. The proposal was not approved.

LG169.G23

It appears that Mahinda College is a primary and secondary school, and should therefore be classified in LG170.A-Z. The proposal was not approved.

NX650.N34

NX650.A-Z is for special topics in the arts. Special places as subjects in the arts are classified in NX653.A-Z. A proposal for the city of Nanjing Shi, China, as a subject in the arts may be resubmitted.

PL721.C25

The subject headings assigned to the work being cataloged indicate that it is a history of Japanese literature and a history of Japanese calligraphy, and do not correspond to this proposed number for Japanese calligraphy as a subject in Japanese literature. The meeting requests that cataloger reexamine the work; if it is about Japanese calligraphy as a subject in Japanese literature, a proposal for the subject heading Calligraphy, Japanese, in literature may be submitted with a resubmitted classification proposal.

P-PZ20 22.S43

P-PZ20 22.A-Z is for special topics in literature in general, and sea stories are a special form of prose fiction.  The proper table entry is P-PZ20 107.S4. The proposal was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

                        H 1147, Animals
                                    $x Diseases $x Climatic factors

Other decisions:

Bald Eagle Lake (Ramsey County, Minn.)

The citation for GNIS provided in the proposal did not list all of the counties in which Bald Eagle Lake is located.  The citation should be corrected and the qualifier revised accordingly. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Big Birch Lake (Minn.)

GNIS has entries for both a lake and a reservoir named Big Birch Lake in Minnesota.  The meeting is unsure whether they are duplicate entries or separate bodies of water. In addition, the GNIS citation provided does not list all of the counties in which Big Birch Lake is located. The proposal may be resubmitted with a full GNIS citation and with evidence indicating whether the lake and reservoir are the same entity.

Big Carnelian Lake (Minn.)

GNIS lists two variant names for this lake that were not included in the proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Civilization, Modern—Religious aspects; Civilization, Modern—Religious aspects—Buddhism, [Christianity, etc.]

The relationship between religion and civilization is represented in LCSH by the heading Religion and civilization. The only information provided in this record is a French title, but judging from the bibliographic record, the meeting suggests that the headings Islamic civilization; Civilization, Modern; and/or Civilization, Western may be appropriate to bring out the specific contents of the work being cataloged. The proposals were not approved.

Clova, Glen (Scotland)

It appears that the citation provided to Geonames may be for Geonames.org, not BGN’s GEOnet. The URL for GEOnet is provided in SHM H 690.  GEOnet provides a variant name for this glen, which was not cited in the proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Çöke Nahiyesi (Turkey)

A citation in the proposal indicates that Çöke Nahiyesi was a historical jurisdiction. It should be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

College fraternity members’ writings; College fraternity members’ writings, American

The work being cataloged is a collection of correspondence by college fraternity members and should be assigned the heading College fraternity members—United States—Correspondence. The proposal was not necessary.

Distinguished Service Medal (Great Britain)

The only reference source cited was Wikipedia, which is not a preferred source. Additionally, neither of the citations provided support the choice of qualifier and broader terms. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Earnock Colliery (Scotland)

The citation provided does not support the BT for Coal mines and mining.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Hacienda de Imus (Philippines)

There appears to be some online evidence that the hacienda is in the town of Imus. Research should be conducted to confirm or deny that possibility, and the qualifier should be adjusted if necessary. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Halobacteriovoraceae; Halobacteriovorax

The classification number included in the proposals was not proposed.  The subject proposals may be resubmitted along with a classification proposal.

Hotaki dynasty

This proposal was made to revise the existing heading Hotak family to Hotaki dynasty.  Dynasties and families of the same name are established separately.  Headings for dynasties are established according to the guidelines in SHM H 1574; following those guidelines, the heading for the dynasty should include the time span of the dynasty and have a BT in the form [place]—Kings and rulers. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Indigenous men; Indigenous men—Identity; Indian men—Identity

The only support provided for these proposals was the title of the work being cataloged, which uses the word “indigenous” but does not indicate in which sense the word is used. It is often used to mean “native to an area” in a general sense and also as an adjective to refer to American Indians. The proposals may be resubmitted with a description of the work being cataloged.

Islamic etiquette

This proposal was made to add a BT Etiquette to the existing heading. The heading already has a BT Religious etiquette, which is an NT of Etiquette.  Hierarchical references are made only to the next broader heading (see H 370). The proposal was not approved.

Lesbian erotic literature, American

The information provided about the work being cataloged does not support the qualifier on the heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Millennium Monument (Chicago, Ill.)

The information provided about the work being cataloged does not support the qualifier on the heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Nuns’ writings; Nuns’ writings, American; Nuns’ writings, Colombian; Nuns’ writings, English; Nuns’ writings, German; Nuns’ writings, Mexican

These proposals were all made to revise the hierarchical structure to Literature—Women authors (for Nuns’ writings) and [nationality] literature—Women authors (for the others).  The meeting wishes to maintain cohesive lists of narrower terms under the headings Literature and [nationality] literature rather than separate some by gender. The proposals were not approved.

Operation Astonia, 1944

The work being cataloged is Cinderella Army: the Canadians in Northwest Europe 1944-1945. It appears to be about the Canadian contributions to the last nine months of World War II, and is not specific to Operation Astonia. The work may be cataloged with the name heading for the First Canadian Army along with World War, 1939-1945—Campaigns—Western Front. The proposal was not necessary.

Paranormal fiction, Scottish

Provided in the proposal were the title of the work being cataloged, Supernatural classics, and the phrase “Scottish lost treasures.”  Neither of those pieces of data seem relevant to the proposed heading, and the meeting suggests that a brief description or summary of the work would be useful. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Pastoral poetry, Swedish

The only information provided in the proposal was the Swedish title of the work being cataloged. The meeting requests that information clarifying the relationship between the proposed heading and the work being cataloged be provided in English. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Saafi language

Ethnologue, which is available in print and online, is a standard reference source when proposing headings for languages. While citing it is not required, it is often the best source available because it provides comprehensive information.  Its entry on Saafi provides several additional variant names that should be UFs.

In addition, the classification number in the proposal is incorrect because it is for the Cangin languages in general, not the Saafi language in particular.  The proposal may be resubmitted with an Ethnologue citation and appropriate UFs and with a classification proposal for Saafi.

Servien family

The information in the proposal indicates that the Servien family bears some relationship to Louis XIV, but does not indicate the location or ethnic background of the family. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Steampunk fiction, Canadian

The title of the work being cataloged, Clockwork Canada, is the only information provided and it does not bear an obvious relationship to the heading being proposed. The meeting requests that a brief description or summary of the work be provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Tae kwon do on postage stamps

Only the Korean title of the work being cataloged was provided in support of this proposal. An English-language description or summary of the work should be provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Yanktonai painting

This heading should have a BT Yanktonai art, which needs to be proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Proposals for literature, religion, music, and “general” genre/form terms

This list included a proposal to revise the existing record for Alternative histories (Fiction). The proposal was withdrawn from consideration and deleted because PSD is not accepting proposals for literature genre/form terms at this time (see the announcement at http://loc.gov/catdir/cpso/genreliterature.html).

Before accepting proposals in the areas of literature, religion, and the general terms, PSD needs to revise LCGFT’s hierarchical structure. That work is ongoing. Review of the remaining terms from the music project is also ongoing, and PSD is therefore not accepting proposals for additional music terms.

Both projects are expected to be completed by early summer 2016, at which time PSD will announce the date on which it will begin to accept proposals.

Film terms based on artistic movements

This list included proposals to cancel the terms Expressionist films, Feminist films, and New wave films. Through consultations with stakeholders, it was determined that movements like Expressionism and Impressionism are often defined after the fact, that the terms referring to them are difficult to assign consistently, and that some creators reject those types of labels even as scholars categorize their work in that way. Further, styles that may seem cohesive and even obvious to a generalist may actually be quite diverse in ways that are clear only to scholars in the field. The meeting has therefore determined that the problems associated with their use are outweighed by the possible benefits; terms based on movements are ineligible for LCGFT.

Terms based on technique or structure (e.g., Creative nonfiction; Experimental films) remain eligible for inclusion.
