CLASSIFICATION

DT159.927.M33; DT433.245.M34

These proposals may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal.  See below under Madi (South Sudanese and Ugandan people) for details.

GV966.6

The work being cataloged is about the political aspects of golf, but the classification number proposed is for Presidents as a special class of persons. In the GV schedule, the caption “Special classes of persons” is ordinarily used for age, gender, or disability groups.  A number in GV979.A-Z for “Political aspects” should be proposed instead.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

N1935.H37

The work being cataloged is about the Humlemagasinet, a museum that collects a diverse assortment of cultural objects such as dolls and beer-making objects, and features extensive gardens.  It should class with general museums in Denmark by city at AM62.H+, a number for which a proposal is not required.  The proposal was not necessary.

N2661.6

The instruction at N510-3990 states, “For histories, treatises, catalogs, etc. of special collections prefer classification by medium, subject, period, or nationality.”  This gallery appears to specialize in Christian art and as such it should class in N7823.I8+, a number for which a proposal is not required.  The proposal was not necessary.

PG3235.B76

The work being cataloged is not a collection of Russian literature about Joseph Brodsky as the proposal indicated. The first part is a collection of Russian poetry by multiple authors. The second part is a collection of world poetry translated into Russian from various languages.  The poems have some relationship to Brodsky, but they are not about him. The work should class with collections of Russia poetry in PG3230.A3-Z.  The proposal was not necessary.

PJ5012.T56

According to the added title page title, the work is about Hebrew poetry alone, not Hebrew literature in general.  It should class in PJ5024. The proposal was not necessary.

PL989.A1K87

The first subject heading assigned to the work cat indicates that it is a collection of Korean fiction, but the second heading says it is about literature.  The cataloger should reexamine the work and adjust the subject headings to clarify if this is a collection of fiction or if it is about literature.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

QR82.H35

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal.  See below under Halobacteriovoraceae for details.

QR99.7.S96

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal.  See below under Cyanobium for details.

TS1969

The work being cataloged is about red meat processing, which is a topic covered under Meat-packing industries in TS1970-1982, and should be classed there.  See below under Red meat processing plants for further details.  The proposal was not necessary.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Announcements:

Proposals for cancellation of subject headings

Many of the proposals for cancellation of subject authority records have not used the prescribed wording, coding, spacing, etc., of the cancellation note (682 field).  The prescribed wording, coding, and spacing for this field are presented in a list in SHM H 193.5, from which the note may be copied and pasted into the proposal.

For example, on this list there is a cancellation proposal that has the note (incorrectly worded and coded):

“This authority record has been deleted because it is covered under name authority record n XXXXXXXXXX.”

The correct wording and coding of the note from H 193.5 is:
“This authority record has been deleted because the subject heading is covered by an identical name heading $0 (DLC)n  XXXXXXXX.”

Another example of incorrect wording from this list is:
“This authority record has been deleted because the subject heading is replaced by the heading $a XXXXXX—In mass media, $i a heading for which a subject authority is not made because it uses a free-floating combination.”

The correct wording of the note from H 193.5 is:
“This authority record has been deleted because the heading is replaced by the heading $a [ . . . ]—In mass media, $i a heading for which a subject authority record is not made because it uses a free-floating subdivision.”

If more attention were paid to these details, processing of the cancellation requests could proceed much more expeditiously.

Other decisions:

Asian American historians

The only support provided for this proposal is the title of the work being cataloged, “Histories and historians in the making,” which is not sufficient. The proposal should include information from the work that supports the ethnic qualifier in the heading being proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Baecula, Battle of, Spain, 208 B.C.

SHM H 1285 states that a battle that occurs in a city should be qualified by the city in which it occurs.  If Baecula existed after 1500 A.D. it should be established in the name authority file, and if it ceased to exist before 1500 A.D. it should be established as a subject (see H 1592), and it should be used as the qualifier on the battle heading.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Beth-Luis-Nion Celtic Tree Calendar

The meeting feels that a heading of this extreme specificity is too specific for a general vocabulary such as LCSH.  The existing heading Calendar, Celtic and the new heading Lunar calendars (approved on this list) may be assigned instead.  The title of the work being cataloged provides access to the specific phrase.  The proposal was not approved.

Biographical fiction, Israeli

The proposal should have included information in English in addition to the Hebrew title of the work being cataloged.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (Indonesia)

SHM H 1925 sec. 1.a states that a park should be established under its own name in the vernacular of the country in which it is located, unless the park is so well known that it appears in a conventional English form in most English-language reference sources.  This park should be established in Indonesian, not English.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Chukbar family

In order to effectively evaluate a proposal for a family name, information should be provided about the ethnicity, nationality, or (at least) the location of the family (see SHM H 1631 sec. 3.a). No information was provided about the nationality, ethnicity, or location of the family.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Conference Center (Salt Lake City, Utah)

It is not clear why this proposal to cancel the heading was made. Buildings are established in LCSH. There is no evidence that it is used as a 710 or 110 in either LC’s or the proposing library’s catalog. If it is needed as a descriptive access point, then DCM Z1 should be followed and the proposal may be resubmitted.

Cookies (Computer science)—Law and legislation

The proposal should have included information in English in addition to the Spanish title of the work being cataloged.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Cyanobium

According to SHM H 1332, biological names are established for the levels species-genus-family-order-class-phylum.  Cyanobium is a genus of bacteria.  The BT on the proposal should represent the family, which is Synechococcaceae.  The proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the family.

Dear family

According to the Dictionary of American family names, Dear is a variant of Deer, for which a family name heading already exists in LCSH.  The variant will be added to the existing heading.  The proposal was not approved.

Electoral courts

The proposal should have included information in English in addition to the Spanish titles of the works being cataloged to justify the proposal.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Enemies in motion pictures

The classification number in the 053 field must be proposed along with the subject heading.  The proposal may be resubmitted along with the classification proposal.

Forty-seven Ronin

The proposal should include information from a source that supports the UF being added to the heading.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Garifuna poetry (English)

Garifuna is an ethnic group and a language, not a nationality. Literature form headings are not qualified by ethnic groups, and a heading for Garifuna-language poetry in English does not make sense.  The proper heading is English poetry—Garifuna authors.  The subdivision needs to be proposed for H 1156, as English literature—Garifuna authors. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Hall, The (Bradford-on-Avon, England)

This proposal is identical to an existing heading (sh2014000332).  The proposal was not necessary.

Halobacteriovoraceae

According to SHM H 1332, biological names are established for the levels species-genus-family-order-class-phylum.  The proposal represents the biological family, which should have the biological order Bdellovibrionales as the BT.  The proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the order.

Hotaki dynasty

This proposal was resubmitted from List 1602, for which the Summary of Decisions stated: “This proposal was made to revise the existing heading Hotak family to Hotaki dynasty.  Dynasties and families of the same name are established separately.  Headings for dynasties are established according to the guidelines in SHM H 1574; following those guidelines, the heading for the dynasty should include the time span of the dynasty and have a BT in the form [place]—Kings and rulers. The proposal may be resubmitted.”

The current proposal still conflates the family with the dynasty.  Families and dynasties should not be represented on the same record, they should be established separately. The record for Hotak family should be retained unchanged.  A new proposal for Hotaki dynasty may be resubmitted, with the addition of a BT for kings and rulers of Afghanistan.

Human Torch (Fictitious characters)

The Human Torch is a fictitious character that has various human identities over time.  The Human Torch himself may have changed his looks over time, but it was still the same character.  It is therefore not a group of fictitious characters according to LCSH, but a single one, which should be established in the name authority file as a pseudonym used by several persons.  The proposal was not approved.

Indian men—Identity

The work being cataloged is about men from a broad range of indigenous ethnic groups.  The new heading Indigenous men—Identity, also on this list, should be assigned instead.  The proposal was not necessary.

Law—Indian influences

The proposal should have included information in English in addition to the Spanish title of the work being cataloged. Following a well-established pattern in LCSH, the BT on this heading should be Indians. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Madi (South Sudanese and Ugandan people)

Joshua Project was cited, but none of the group’s dozen or so variant names listed there were provided in the 670 or as UFs. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Lugbara (African people)

This proposal made no changes to this record.  If any changes are required, the proposal may be resubmitted.

Merry Widow Mine (N.M.)

The cataloger provided no indication of the product being mined, which is important for the choice of BT.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Msaxuraże family

In order to effectively evaluate a proposal for a family name, information should be provided about the ethnicity, nationality, or (at least) the location of the family (see SHM H 1631 sec. 3.a).  No information was provided on the family nationality, ethnicity, or location, nor was there support for the form of the name chosen.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Negative income tax—Law and legislation

No support was provided to justify the subdivision –Law and legislation. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Nordhoff family

In order to effectively evaluate a proposal for a family name, information should be provided about the ethnicity, nationality, or (at least) the location of the family (see SHM H 1631 sec. 3.a).  No information was provided on the nationality, ethnicity, or location of the family.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Nursing (Islamic law)

The proposal should have included information in English in addition to the Arabic title of the work being cataloged.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Parque Nacional Jardines de la Reina (Cuba)

This proposal mixes the park and the islands.  SHM H 1925 sec. 1.d states that separate headings should exist when a park is coextensive with a natural feature.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Pastoral poetry, Swedish

The cataloger provided no information supporting the language in the proposal, it is therefore impossible to determine whether the poetry being examined is Swedish or whether the work examines poetry in general.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Poets, Gabonese

The proposal should have included information in English in addition to the French title of the work being cataloged.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Putin family

In order to effectively evaluate a proposal for a family name, information should be provided about the ethnicity, nationality, or (at least) the location of the family (see SHM H 1631 sec. 3.a).   No information was provided on nationality, ethnicity, or location of the family. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Red meat processing plants

LCSH practice has been to conflate “red meat” with “meat,” and the meeting chose to retain that practice.  The existing heading Packing-houses should be assigned to the work cat.  An upward reference from Red meat processing plants will be added to the existing heading Packing-houses.  The proposal was not approved.

Sjaelland (Denmark)

GeoNet lists an ADM1 of the same name. If the ADM1 is coextensive with the island, a proposal to cancel the subject heading should be made. If not, then the heading should be qualified to disambiguate it from the ADM1, per SHM H 807. The proposal should include a BT for the type of feature. Also, the results of the current GeoNet search should not be added to the “algorithmically matched” citation.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Talhouët family; Ascanie family; Freslon family

In order to effectively evaluate a proposal for a family name, information should be provided about the ethnicity, nationality, or (at least) the location of the family (see SHM H 1631 sec. 3.a).  No information was provided on the family nationality, ethnicity, or location.  The proposals may be resubmitted.

Desgrées family

In order to effectively evaluate a proposal for a family name, information should be provided about the ethnicity, nationality, or (at least) the location of the family (see SHM H 1631 sec. 3.a).  No information was provided on the family nationality, ethnicity, or location.  Also, support for the UF should be provided.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCE TERMS

church bells

Bell is the medium of performance, the location of the bells is immaterial.  Also, the 670 does not use the phrase “church bells” in support of the proposal.  The term bell should be assigned.  The proposal was not approved.

DEMOGRAPHIC GROUP TERMS

 Antiguan Americans

This proposal may be resubmitted with a proposal for Antiguans.

 Palestinians

Palestinian Arabs are not the same as Palestinians, since Christians and Muslims also live in Palestine.  LCDGT general policy is that if an ethnic group is also the demonym for a country, the term is included as a national/regional group. Due to the sensitivity of this particular location, though, separate headings for Palestinians as a national/regional group and Palestinian Arabs as an ethnic group are advisable.  The proposal may be resubmitted.

Yoopers

Demographic Group Terms Manual instruction sheet L 540 indicates that demonyms for people from particular continents, supra-national regions, countries, sub-national regions, and first-level administrative subdivisions of countries are in scope for LCDGT. Yoopers is a term for the residents of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and the term is therefore out of scope.  The proposal was withdrawn and deleted.
