CLASSIFICATION

DU424.N45

The classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See below under Ngāti Tūtemohuta (Australian people).

PN1995.9.S6968

Works on documentary films are classified with the topic covered in the films. The work being cataloged is about documentaries on strikes and lockouts in Belgium, and should be classified in HD5386-5388. The proposal was not approved.

G3464 .B588

The town listed in the caption has not been established in the name authority file. The proposal may be resubmitted after the town name is established.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Authors, Sudanese

The heading Authors, Sudanese was established in 1996. The proposal was not necessary.

Baby hatches

The work being cataloged appears to be about a pastor who accepts infants who are left in a baby hatch outside his church, and it not about baby hatches. The proposal was not necessary.

Birch in art

Only the title of the work being cataloged, “Bereza,” was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal should include information from the work that supports the concept represented by the proposed heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Birnbaum family

The proposal should include evidence that the UFs provided are actually variants of the existing heading, and not names of other families that are associated in some way with the Birnbaum family. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Buccinoidea

Buccinoidea is a superfamily, and SHM H 1332 sec. 1 says, “Do not establish … superfamilies except in the case of popular names for intermediate groups, such as butterflies or trout, or common names for well-known subspecies.” The proposed heading does not meet any of those criteria, and was not necessary.

Čʻarkviani family

The proposal should have indicated in English the ethnicity or nationality of the name and the location of the family, per H 1631 sec. 3.a. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Castillo de Valderradela (Chinchón, Spain)

The proposal should have included the location of the castle in English in order to support the qualifier, and also should have included a UF from the significant word(s) in the name of the castle (see SHM H 1334 sec. 4.a). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Central American literature—Indian authors

The proposal should have included information in English in addition to the Spanish title of the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Char D2 (Tank)

Several issues with this proposal lead the meeting to believe that it was submitted prematurely. There was no usage provided to support the UFs proposed, and no BT was provided. In addition, the geographic subdivision byte was set to the default “May Subd Geog” instead of to “Not Subd Geog.” A completed proposal may be resubmitted.

Combahee River Valley (S.C.)

The source information in the proposal did not provide any evidence that a heading for the valley was needed for the resource being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted if it the Combahee River Valley was needed. Otherwise, the cataloger should delete it from the proposal system.

Commerce in motion pictures

The proposal should have included information in English in addition to the title of the work being cataloged, which appears to be in Turkish. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Concrete poetry, Maltese

Only the title of the work being cataloged, “Malta,” was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal should include information from the work that indicates the need for the proposal and supports the heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Creative agencies

The meeting questions whether it is possible to define a “creative agency” in opposition to other types of firms that are already established in LCSH, including Advertising agencies, Design services, Consulting firms, and Marketing research companies. One or more of the existing headings may be assigned to the resource being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.

Diamant-Berger family

The proposal should have indicated in English the ethnicity or nationality of the name and the location of the family, per H 1631 sec. 3.a. The proposal may be resubmitted. The proposals to add RTs to the existing headings Berger family and Diamond family may be resubmitted at the same time.

Diplomats’ writings; Diplomats’ writings, English; Diplomats’ writings, Malaysian (English)

The citation in the proposal for Diplomats’ writings, Malaysian (English) does not indicate the language of the writings, which cannot be inferred from the language of the title of the work being cataloged.  That proposal, along with the foundational proposals Diplomats’ writings and Diplomats’ writings, English, maybe resubmitted.

Elafonisos Island (Greece)

The island of Elafonisos is co-extensive with the municipality of the same name. The municipality should be established in the name authority file and assigned to works on the island as a geographic feature and to works on the municipality (see SHM H 807 sec. 1). The proposal was not approved.

Embroidery, Bedouin

The proposal should have included information in English in addition to the Arabic title of the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Epic literature, Mnong

The proposal should have included information in English in addition to the Vietnamese title of the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Gaḍhavī family

The proposal should have indicated in English the ethnicity or nationality of the name and the location of the family, per H 1631 sec. 3.a. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Guramišvili family

The proposal should have indicated in English the ethnicity or nationality of the name and the location of the family, per H 1631 sec. 3.a. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Helmingham Hall (England)

The broader terms assigned to this proposed heading follow the provisions of H 1572, Dwellings with Extensive Grounds, but, while the source citations clearly specify the name of the house and its location and history, they do not indicate that it has extensive grounds.  In addition, the tag selected was 110, which is used for buildings without extensive grounds; according to H 1572, dwellings that have extensive grounds should be tagged 151.  The meeting was confused about the intent of the proposal and requests it be reviewed for internal consistency and resubmitted.

High Bank Works Unit, Hopewell Culture National Historical Park (Ohio); Hopeton Works Unit, Hopewell Culture National Historical Park (Ohio); Hopewell Mound Group Unit, Hopewell Culture National Historical Park (Ohio); Turpen Tract (Ohio)

Each of these proposals represents the geographic area corresponding to an administrative subunit of the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park. Rather than approving separate headings, the meeting determined that a better approach would be to provide each subunit as a UF to the existing heading for the park, following the precedent set by a 2012 decision on the subunits of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness (Mont.). The UFs have been added to the heading. The proposals were not approved.

Immigrants’ writings, Afghan

The proposal should have included information in English in addition to the Persian title of the work being cataloged. Since it did not, the meeting can make only a guess as to the correct approach to the cataloging of the work. The BT provided was Persian literature, which leads the meeting to believe that the work is immigrants’ writings in Persian. In that case, the correct heading would be Immigrants’ writings, Persian—Afghanistan and the proposal is not approved. If the work does not consist of immigrants’ writings in Persian, the proposal may be resubmitted with information about the scope of the work in English.

Indigenous arts

The scope of the work being cataloged is unclear from the citation provided. If the work is limited to indigenous art from only one, two, or three regions of the world then it should be assigned (a) heading(s) appropriate for the region(s) (e.g., Indian arts—South America; Arts, Maori).  If the resource is broader in scope, the proposal may be resubmitted with information to that effect provided in the source citation.

Landenberger family

The reference source cited indicates that the family is German or Swiss, but the family in the work being cataloged is from Pennsylvania. Since names can change through immigration, it would be helpful if information about the source and current location of the family were provided in the citation for the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Locally elected representatives

This proposal is too specific for LCSH. Works about employees and elected representatives of local governments, either together or separately, are assigned the heading Local officials and employees. The proposal was not approved.

Luggage in art

The citation for the work being cataloged includes the English phrases “Overnight trip” and “baggage,” but does not indicate how those concepts relate to art. All parts of the heading should be supported in the citations. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Melodrama, Persian

The citation for the work being cataloged provides the Persian title and an English translation, “Properties of romance & melodrama.”  The citation does not include an indication of the language of the melodrama discussed in the work. The language of the literature being discussed cannot be inferred from the language of the title (e.g., an English-language work may be about French literature). The proposal may be resubmitted.

 Mžavanaże family

The proposal should have indicated in English the ethnicity or nationality of the name and the location of the family, per H 1631 sec. 3.a. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Ngāti Tūtemohuta (Australian people)

The proposal did not include any citations indicating that research was done to determine whether Ngāti Tūtemohuta is the preferred form of name for this ethnic group. In addition, the qualifier indicates that the group is Australian, but the BTs indicate that it is a Maori group from New Zealand. The cataloger should provide UFs from any alternative forms found while doing research, and also inverted references to bring the significant word to the front if necessary. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Obedience in art

The only support provided for this proposal is the title of the work being cataloged, “Gehorsam,” which is not sufficient. The proposal should include information from the work that supports the heading being proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Paranormal fiction, Cuban

The citation for the work being cataloged included an English translation of the Spanish title, but not any support for the nationality of the paranormal fiction. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Parque Céspedes (Santiago de Cuba, Cuba)

The proposal includes a UF Plaza de Armas (Santiago de Cuba, Cuba). It appears from the information in source citations that the Plaza de Armes and the Parque Céspedes are different entities that have occupied the same space at different times. They should be represented by separate headings. The meeting was unsure which heading, or both, was needed. One or two proposals may be resubmitted as necessary.

Physicians’ writings, Cuban

The proposal should have included information in English in addition to the Spanish title of the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Pine Valley (Nev.)

It appears that Pine Valley is the valley of Pine Creek. Since Pine Creek is not established, a proposal for it may be submitted along with a resubmitted proposal for Pine Valley.

Travelers’ writings, Swiss (Italian)

The citation for the work being cataloged provides information in English, but it does not indicate the nationality or language of the authors of the writings. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Women, Cypriot; Women, Turkish

The citation for the work being cataloged provides an English translation of the title, but “There is no more a place far from home (Is there)?” does not indicate that headings for Cypriot and Turkish women are appropriate for the resource. The proposal may be resubmitted with either additional information from the work being cataloged or a short cataloger-supplied summary.

World War, 1939-1945—Japanese American gardeners

SHM H 1200 includes numerous subdivisions for classes of persons and ethnic groups, but not any subdivisions that combine an ethnic group and a class of persons. The meeting does not want to break with that precedent.  The headings World War, 1939-1945—Japanese Americans; Gardeners [or Gardening]—California—Manzanar, and Manzanar War Relocation Center are sufficient for the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.

Zabbix (Computer monitoring software)

According to SHM H 405, headings for computer software are established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.
