CLASSIFICATION

B491.R46

The proposal to equate priors and religion as topics in Aristotle’s philosophy did not include the title of the work being cataloged nor any other information supporting the proposal. In addition, there is no subject heading for priors as a concept. The meeting notes that one of Aristotle’s works is entitled Prior Analytics and is about deductive reasoning.  It is therefore possible that a work about “priors” should be classified in B441, B491.R4, or even BC60.  The proposal may be resubmitted with supporting information if necessary.

BL2067 and related proposals

These proposals were made to expand the classification range for the history and principles of religions in Laos. The LC catalog contains only five works on this subject. It was not considered to be useful to divide such a small file. The proposal was not approved.

DS70.8.J84

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal.  See Juḥaysh (Arab tribe) below for details.

DS489.25.C47

Works about Christians in a particular place are generally classified with the history of Christianity by region or country in BR500+. The work being cataloged may be classified in BR1176. The proposal was not approved.

DS935.753

In accordance with the decision on the subject proposals Korea (North)—Civilization—1948-1994 and Korea (North)—Social life and customs—1948-1994, below, this classification proposal was not approved.

KF4868.F34

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal.  See Faith-based dispute resolution below for details.

N72.T74

This proposal was made for the relation of transgender people to art (not transgender people as depicted in art, which would be classified in N8253.A-Z). A subject proposal for either Art and transgender people or Art and gender nonconformity should be submitted before the classification proposal can be considered. The classification proposal may be resubmitted along with a subject proposal.

NK9509.97.A-Z

Special artists of toys are classified in NK9509.65.A-Z. The proposal was not necessary.

PG5003.2.H67

The work being cataloged is about horror fiction and gothic fiction and should be classified in PG5011. The proposal was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

                        H 1154, Languages
                                    $x Binomial

Other decisions:

Agul literature; Folk songs, Agul

The only information provided in English in these proposals was a cataloger’s translation of the title, “Agul folklore,” for which a heading for the ethnic group subdivided by –Folklore would be appropriate. SHM H 1627 explains the difference between literature and folklore. If the work is indeed folkloric, then the proposal Agul literature was not necessary but a proposal for the ethnic group should be submitted.
Likewise, the proposal Folk songs, Agul, was not necessary if the work is about folklore. Folklore is a textual form, not a musical one.

If the work being cataloged is about non-folkloric Agul literature and Agul folk songs, then the proposals may be resubmitted with information to that effect included in the citations. If a heading in the form [ethnic group]—Folklore would be appropriate, then a proposal for the ethnic group may be resubmitted.

Authors, Agul

The only information provided in English was a cataloger’s translation of the title, “Agul folklore,” which does not explain the relationship between the proposal and the work being cataloged. In addition, Agul in this case refers to an ethnic group, and that group has not been established. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged, as well as a proposal for the Agul ethnic group.

Columbian exchange

Columbus’ 1492 voyage and the biological and cultural exchanges that occurred as a result of Columbus’ explorations affected every aspect of life throughout the world, up to and including the present day. The heading History, Modern, should be assigned to works on the subject in general. Works on specific aspects of the exchanges should be entered under headings specific to the topic (e.g., Medical geography; Biogeography; Commerce; Cultural relations; Europe—History—1492- ; Diseases and history). Those headings may be post-coordinated with the heading America—Discovery and exploration, as well as the name heading for Columbus if desired. The proposal was not approved.

Dro (Dance)

The information provided in English was not detailed enough for the meeting to evaluate the proposal. The proposal was for a dance in Tibet, but there is an unrelated dance of the same name in Brittany.  In order to disambiguate the dances effectively, the meeting requests information on the purpose and context of the Tibetan dance. For instance, is it a religious dance, or is it performed as part of a ceremony or on a holiday? The proposal may be resubmitted.

Equatorial Guinean fiction (Spanish); Short stories, Equatorial Guinean (Spanish)

The information about the work being cataloged that was provided in a 952 (cataloger’s note) field should have been provided in the 670 field for the work.  The proposals may be resubmitted.

 Short stories, African (Spanish)

The English-language information that was provided about the work being cataloged indicates that the work is a collection of Equatorial Guinean fiction in Spanish, not a collection of Spanish-language short stories from Africa as a whole. The proposal was not necessary.

Faith-based dispute resolution

Only the title of the work being cataloged, “Sharia tribunals, rabbinical courts, and Christian panels,” was provided in support of this proposal. The phrase faith-based typically refers to activities that are performed in a prayerful or religious way, and usually not to activities undertaken by religious institutions. Therefore, the concept itself is not inherently legal, as suggested by the proposed UF Faith-based dispute resolution—Law and legislation.  More fundamentally, though, a definition or description of faith-based dispute resolution from the work being cataloged and from other sources should be provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Fathers and daughters in art

The work being cataloged is an artists’ book about virginity, and should be assigned the heading Virginity in art. The proposal was not necessary.

Fort Elson (Gosport, England); Fort Gomer (Gosport, England)

Forts Elson and Gomer were active military installations into the mid-20th century. According to SHM H 405, all military installations active after 1899 are established in the name authority file. The proposals were not approved.

Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station (England)

There are three nuclear power stations – named A, B, and C – on Hinkley Point. The meeting would prefer to establish a heading that represents all three of them as a group if possible, and requests that research be done to determine whether the stations together have a proper name or appellation.  If so, a proposal representing all three of the stations may be resubmitted. If not, then the current proposal may be resubmitted.

Juḥaysh (Arab tribe)

Information in English should be provided to support the qualifier and the broader terms proposed. The proposal was not approved.

Korea (North)—Civilization—1948-1994

SHM H 1370 states that specific time periods may be established under headings in the form [place]—Civilization “at broad levels, usually covering forty years or more, and … only in situations where files are likely to become large.” LC’s database contains only one work that has been assigned the free-floating string Korea (North)—Civilization—20th century, so it does not seem likely that the file will become large. The work being cataloged should be assigned the heading Korea (North)—Civilization—20th century. The proposal was not approved.

Korea (North)—Social life and customs—1948-1994

SHM H 2057 states that specific time periods may be established under headings in the form [place]—Social life and customs for “significant periods, usually covering forty years or more … where there is sufficient material to warrant it.” LC’s database contains only one work that has been assigned the free-floating string Korea (North)—Social life and customs—20th century.  The work being cataloged should be assigned the heading Korea (North)—Social life and customs—20th century. The proposal was not approved.

Mautāṇā (Social custom)

Mautāṇā is almost synonymous with the established heading Blood money, and the work being cataloged may be assigned the existing heading. The proposal was not approved.

Mekong River Region

Headings for regions of rivers may be established on a free-floating basis, according to SHM H 1140. The proposal was not necessary.

Patriotic poetry, Malay

Only a Malay title was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.

Water—Pollution

This proposal was made to add the UFs Water—Pollution—Control and Water pollution control to the existing heading. The meeting prefers not to establish individual UFs in the form [topic]—Pollution—Control or [topic] pollution control. Instead, a proposal to add the UFs Pollution—Control and Pollution—Prevention and control to the more general heading Pollution prevention was made and added to the list. The proposal to add UFs to Water—Pollution was not approved.

Professional learning communities

This proposal was made to add the UF Critical friends groups (Education) to the existing heading. The two concepts are not equivalent, as explained by the website of National School Reform Faculty, which owns the trademark Critical Friends Group. The proposal was not approved.

Talibés

As used in the work being cataloged and in the proposal, talibés are students at traditional Qur’anic boarding schools in Senegal. Many talibés are forced to beg in the streets and also suffer other forms of abuse. In Senegal, the word talibés also refers to militant adherents of political parties. The word has also been used to refer to members of the Taliban. The proposed heading was therefore highly ambiguous.
Additionally, LCSH is conservative regarding the inclusion of headings in other languages. According to SHM H 315, topical headings may be established in a language other than English only 1. if no English term for the concept exists, and the concept is normally expressed in foreign terms even in English-language works and reference sources, or 2. no citation to the concept can be found in any English-language work or reference source, and the concept appears to be unique to the language of the work being cataloged.
There is some evidence that the word talibés – in the sense of Muslim boarding-school students – is used in English-language reference sources. However, the difficulty of disambiguating the heading, along with the fact that talibés seems to be merely a local word for Muslim boarding school students, argued against authorizing the proposed heading.

The work being cataloged may be assigned the class of persons headings Boarding school students—Senegal and Muslim students—Senegal. The abuse may be brought out with headings such as Begging; Beggars; Forced labor; and Child labor, all subdivided by Senegal.

The proposal was not approved.

Tule Lake Unit (Calif.)

SHM H 1925 sec. 1.b states that separately named administrative units of parks should be added as UFs to the heading for the park. The Tule Lake Unit is an administrative unit of the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. UFs in the form Tule Lake Unit (Calif.) and World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument (Tule Lake Unit) were added to the existing heading World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. The proposal was not approved.

Turkey Creek (Cochise County, Ariz.)

According to the information provided in the proposal, the work being cataloged is about the Turkey Creek Caldera, not Turkey Creek. The proposal was not necessary.

Zhiqing in literature

The proposal Zhiqing was not approved on List 8 (2017), so this proposal for a phrase heading based on Zhiqing also was not approved.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Flag illustrations

It appears that the work being cataloged is a collection of illustrations of flags that should be assigned the subject heading Flags—Pictorial works along with the genre/form term Illustrated works. The proposal was not approved.

Military posters

The proposal listed several individual posters whose only commonality is that they were all published by a branch of the military. Some of the posters listed may be assigned established genre/form terms such as War posters and others may eventually be cataloged with terms that are being developed in the art project. Regardless, the type of publisher is not a defining characteristic of a genre or a form. The proposal was not necessary.

Neo-realist fiction (China)

Terms based on artistic movements were cancelled on Approved List 2 (2016). As the Summary of Decisions for that list stated, “movements like Expressionism and Impressionism are often defined after the fact, that the terms referring to them are difficult to assign consistently, and that some creators reject those types of labels even as scholars categorize their work in that way. Further, styles that may seem cohesive and even obvious to a generalist may actually be quite diverse in ways that are clear only to scholars in the field. The meeting has therefore determined that the problems associated with their use are outweighed by the possible benefits; terms based on movements are ineligible for LCGFT.”

The proposal was not approved.

Zhiqing literature

The subject proposal Zhiqing was not approved on List 8 (2017). The Summary of Decisions for List 8 stated, “The work being cataloged is the reminiscences of a zhiqing, a high school graduate sent from the city to the countryside during China’s Cultural Revolution. The word zhiqing has also had several other meanings through time, and loosely translates to the generic English phrase “educated youth.” After consultation with an expert on Chinese and much deliberation, the meeting determined that it was not possible to establish an unambiguous heading for this class of persons, in either English or Chinese.”

The same problems of ambiguity apply to this genre/form proposal, which was not approved.
