CLASSIFICATION
B2430.F56-.F564
Alain Finkielkraut was not a philosopher, he was in intellectual who wrote about a lot of things, including the history of philosophy. The work is cataloged as a study of conservativism and intellectual life in France, which should class in either JC573.2.A-Z or DC33.8, respectively. The proposal was not necessary.
GR305.7.K38
This number was proposed for “Kannada,” which is a language of India. The range of numbers, GR305.7.A-Z, is for ethnic groups. The ethnic group for people who speak the Kannada language is Kanarese, which is already represented in the schedule at GR305.7.K36. The proposal was not approved.
PL789.D29
Emperor Daigo was not a literary author. The work being cataloged is a criticism of his diary, which should class with the diary in DS855.87+. The proposal was not approved.
PL989.143
The existing number, PL989.143.C53, is fine as it is. The proposal was not approved.
PN1083.W38
The work is an exhibition catalog, and the exhibition consisted of poetry. This work is a collection of poetry, which should class in PN6110.W28. The proposal was not necessary.
PN1995.9.H362
This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised subject proposal. See Harbors in motion pictures below for details.
PN2041.C75
This number is inappropriate for crises in theater because this span is intended for philosophy, aesthetics, and relation to other disciplines. The bib record is cataloged as if the work is about crises in drama (that is, literature). If that is the case, then it should class in PN1650.A-Z, and a proposal will be necessary. If it is about crises as represented on the stage (that is, theater), as suggested by the class number proposed, then it should be classed in PN2071.A-Z, and a cutter will need to be proposed along with a heading in the form Crises in the theater. The proposal may be resubmitted.
PT9295.M37
The work appears to be about masculinity in the works of three 19th century Swedish authors, not masculinity in Swedish literature not limited to a time period. A proposal in the span PT9367.A-Z may be resubmitted.
QP552.L47; QP552.S54
These two numbers were proposed for headings that were to be used as broader terms on the heading Paxillin, which was approved on this list. The classification proposals for “backdoor” headings, i.e., headings that were established simply for the hierarchy of a new heading, were not necessary.
TJ211.49
The proposal added an including note that covers aspects (e.g., moral and ethical aspects, social aspects) that are assumed to be included in any general number. The proposal was not necessary.
P-PZ20 22.T96
The proposed number is in the span for topics in literature, not classes of persons in literature. A proposal in P-PZ20 23.A-Z may be resubmitted.
SUBJECT HEADINGS
Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:
H 1195, Land vehicles
$x Motors $x Mounts
Other decisions:
Athlone Castle (Athlone, Ireland)
To support the qualifier and BT proposed, the citations should give the location of Athlone Castle. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Black Pig’s Dyke Site (Ireland)
The 670s do not indicate that this is an archaeological site, which could as easily be read as a justification for a proposal for a current-day dyke. The proposal also does not have the BT required for archaeological sites (see H 1225). The proposal may be resubmitted.
Computers; Analog computers
The existing scope note on the heading Computers, makes a distinction between electronic computers and mechanical computers, of which Analog computers is representative. This distinction has been used consistently for an extended time, and the meeting does not wish to challenge the stability of that structure. The proposals were not approved.
Dartmouth Castle (Dartmouth, England)
To support the qualifier and BT proposed, the citations should give the location of Dartmouth Castle. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Devon Energy Center (Oklahoma City, Okla.)
This building is occupied by the Devon Energy Corporation, which is close enough in wording that the corporate name heading should be used for works about the building, per H 1334. The proposal was not approved.
Doctor’s plot, 1953
This “plot” led to the arrest of fourteen Jewish doctors in the Soviet Union on suspicion of being spies. They were later released. The work being cataloged never capitalizes the phrase “doctor’s plot,” but uses it as a general descriptor.
A name authority record based on the work being cataloged as created in 2007 and was used by the proposing library to catalog the work very adequately. The headings that were assigned are Jews—Soviet Union—History; Antisemitism—Soviet Union—History; Soviet Union—History—1925-1953; and Soviet Union—Politics and government—1936-1953.
The proposal was not approved.
Ecuador Earthquake, Ecuador, 2016
According to H 1592, to be separately established an event needs to have a conventional name or a generally accepted name in English. The citations do not support a generally accepted or a conventional name. The cataloger should provide support for the name or assign the heading Earthquakes—Ecuador. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Eltingville Store (New York, N.Y.)
The UFs provided are so vague that they could be read as general appellations, but they do seem to be proper names. They should be qualified by the street name, per H 1592. The proposal may be resubmitted along with a proposal for the street.
Fort Totleben (Russia)
In the proposal, no usage was cited for the UF Fort Pervomaĭskiĭ. Also, the location of the fort is not specifically identified. The location affects the qualifier and the use of the heading as a geographic subdivision. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Francis Street (Dublin, Ireland); Meath Street (Dublin, Ireland)
In order to support the qualifier and the BT, the proposals should include citations that indicate the location of the streets. The fact that they are in Dublin cannot be assumed. The proposals may be resubmitted.
Group identity in motion pictures
Only a French title was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.
Collective memory in motion pictures
Only a French title was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.
Harbors in motion pictures
Only a French title was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.
Kruser-Finley House (New York, N.Y.)
The UF Cooper’s Shop should be qualified by the street name, which needs to be established. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Malahide Estuary (Ireland)
The 670s do not indicate the location. Plus, Geonet lists a Malahide Inlet. Is it the same thing? And is the estuary associated with a river? If so, the river has to be established. The proposal may be resubmitted.
National characteristics, Northern Irish
For purposes of the national adjective used as a qualifier, LCSH does not distinguish between Irish and Northern Irish. Headings in the form Irish [topic] or [topic], Irish are used regardless of whether the work is about the Irish from the Republic of Ireland, the Northern Irish, or both. This is a practical solution for the problem that you often cannot tell which group is being discussed. The proposal was not approved.
Orden de Carlos III
The Orden de Carlos III (formal name: Real y Distinguida Orden Española de Carlos III) is a chivalric order, not an award; therefore, the heading has been established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.
Psychoanalysis and military intelligence
The work being cataloged does not appear to discuss a reciprocal relationship between the two concepts. The heading Military intelligence—Psychological aspects should be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.
Riding the rails
The heading being proposed overlaps significantly with the existing heading Railroad travel, although that does not sound as romantic. The Oxford English Dictionary defines riding the rails as “to travel by train, frequently without paying a fare,” and is cited in the record. The scope note provided indicates that it is about traveling by any type of train without paying a fare (without the concept of “frequently”). All of the sources cited in the proposal indicate that the term was used during the Depression Era. The meeting requested that the cataloger supply documentation of terminology currently used for the concept of “riding the rails.” If such terminology cannot be found, the heading Railroad travel should be used instead. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Rogerstown Estuary (Ireland)
There was no information about the location of the estuary provided in the record, and GeoNet also was not searched. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Satellite power transmission
There is no need to build in an extra layer of hierarchy for this concept. The proposal was not approved.
Schenckenschans (Netherlands)—History—Siege, 1635
It appears that this was a siege on a fort, not a siege on a town (which grew up in and around the ruins of the fort). The fortress needs to be established. The proposal may be resubmitted.
Shir (The Hebrew word)
Only a Hebrew title was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the proposal to the work being cataloged.
Unified modeling language (Computer program language)
Unified modeling language is represented by UML (Computer science), an existing heading. The proposal was not necessary.
Western mosquitofish populations
The proposal is for a species-specific population; however, the meeting prefers that headings for populations should be established for broader groupings (e.g., genera, families, or intermediate groupings) rather than for single species whenever possible. Simliar headings have been proposed in the past and were not approved (see the Summary of Decisions of Editorial Meetings 1102, Captive lutra lutra, and 1103, Macrobrachium rosenbergii culture, and others). In the case of western mosquitofish, it would be difficult to establish such a broader heading; therefore, this proposal is approved.
For the future, catalogers are requested to avoid making proposals for single-species topics (such as populations) and headings that indicate the species status (such as endangered or captive) whenever possible. Headings for the broader groupings, such as Captive otters or Plankton populations, should be postcoordinated with headings for the particular species.
Women and tourism
The description of the work provided says, “Women’s life seen through tourism,” which does not indicate that the topics are examined at a high level, and each in terms of the other. The proposal was not necessary.
Woodlawn House (Woodlawn, Galway, Ireland)
In order to support the qualifier and the BT, the proposal should include a citation that indicates the location of the house. The proposal may be resubmitted.
GENRE/FORM TERMS
Biographical operas
The proposal provided usage of this term, but it did not provide a definition. If a definition can be found in standard music reference or other authoritative sources, the proposal may be resubmitted. If a definition cannot be found, the term Operas should be assigned along with subject headings appropriate to the topic.
Dance posters; Film posters
On List 1711, the BT Promotional materials was intentionally removed from the original proposals for these terms. These proposals to add it back were not approved.
Gay erotic comics; Lesbian erotic fiction; Gay erotic drama; Gay erotic poetry; Lesbian erotic poetry
There are several established terms (and new proposals) that violate a base principle of LCGFT, which is that compound terms are not allowed. They are: Gay erotic comics; Gay erotic drama; Gay erotic fiction; Gay erotic films; Gay erotic poetry; Gay pornographic comics; Gay pornographic films; Lesbian erotic fiction; Lesbian erotic films; and Lesbian erotic poetry. Each of these can be covered by post-coordinating two existing headings. For example, Gay erotic comics would be covered by Gay comics and Erotic comics. The existing terms that violate the principle will be cancelled.
In accordance with this decision, two terms, Gay films and Lesbian films were added to this list.
The proposals cited above were not approved.
Holiday recipes
Holiday recipes could be any recipe that is used during the holidays. The genre/form term Recipes may be post-coordinated with an appropriate subject heading (e.g., Christmas cooking; Rosh-ha-Shanah cooking). The proposal was not approved.
Opera excerpts; Chinese opera excerpts
The meeting chose not to approve additional narrower terms of Excerpts that are made up of the term followed by the word “excerpts,” which would represent only the form. The term Excerpts may be assigned along with another term appropriate to the work being cataloged. Existing narrower terms of Excerpts will be retained exceptionally. The proposals were not approved.
Opera posters
On List 1711, the BT Promotional materials was intentionally removed from the original proposal for this term. The proposal to add it back was not approved.
Rock posters
To prevent a proliferation of terms for posters from every conceivable musical form, the term Music posters (also on this list) should be assigned with an appropriate subject heading for the type of music or event. The proposal was not approved.
Vampire fiction
On List 1801, the BT Horror fiction was intentionally removed from the original proposal for this term. The proposal to add it back was not approved.
