CLASSIFICATION

B105.H67

According to the subject cataloging, the work is about the philosophy of hospitality.  The work should be classified with hospitality in BJ2021+. The proposal was not approved.

B765.E8-.E84

Eustratius, Metropolitan of Nicaea, wrote commentaries on the works of Aristotle. He does not appear to have been a philosopher in his own right. The work being cataloged may be classified in two different places, depending on the focus. It should be classified with Aristotle in B400+ if it is chiefly about Eustratius’ criticism of Aristotle. If it is chiefly a biography of Eustratius, then it should be classified with biography of the Orthodox Eastern Church in BX395.A-Z.  The proposal was not approved.

PN6377.S66

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Riddles, Somali for details.

PQ637.M45

The classification number assigned to a work should correspond to the first (or first two) subject headings assigned, per SHM H 80. The first subject heading assigned to the work being cataloged is Proust’s name heading; the heading Memory in literature, which corresponds to the classification proposal, is the fourth heading assigned. If the work is about memory in the fiction of Proust, it should class with Proust in PQ2631.R63 and the proposal was not necessary. If it is about memory in French fiction in general, then the order of headings should be adjusted and the proposal may be resubmitted.

PQ3979.R55

A cataloger’s comment in the proposal says that the work being cataloged is a French-language novel by Cambodian author. However, the descriptive cataloging indicates that it is a French translation of a Khmer novel. Works of literature are classified with the original language. If the work was originally published in French, then the cataloging should be adjusted and the proposal may be resubmitted. If the work was originally published in Khmer, then it should be classified with individual authors of Khmer literature and a proposal for a literary author number in PL4328.A-Z may be resubmitted.

PR9199.3.P275

This proposal was made to establish a literary author number for Frank L. Packard as an early 20th century Canadian author. He has already been established as an American author of the early 20th century and given the number PS3531.A2154.

Packard’s works were cataloged during his lifetime and contemporaneous with their publication. CSM F 632 sec. 2.c states that when little is known about a living author, the country of residence is based on the information available, including the place of publication. Packard’s works were chiefly published in New York; it appears that none were published in Canada.

F 632 also states, “Once a decision has been made to class an author with a particular country, this number will usually continue to be used. Do not change the number unless the original choice was clearly in error.”

The classification of Packard as an American was apparently based on the place of publication of the works. The meeting does not wish to begin a practice of second-guessing the nationality of long-established modern literary authors in situations where the existing literary author number was not clearly in error when it was assigned.

A reference from PR9199.3.P+ to PS3531.A2154 was made. The proposal for a Canadian literary author number for Packard was not approved.

P-PZ20 81.G39

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Gay erotic poetry, Mexican for details.

P-PZ22 10.U72

This table proposal is for works on the theme of urban violence in literature. The subject heading Urban violence in literature, along with a heading for the literature itself, would be assigned to the work being cataloged.  The headings assigned to the work are Urdu literature—Pakistan—History and criticism; Karachi (Pakistan)—Politics and government; Karachi (Pakistan)—Ethnic relations; and Karachi (Pakistan)—Social conditions. Assuming that the subject cataloging is correct, the proposal was not necessary for the work being cataloged. If the subject cataloging does not accurately reflect the contents of the work, the proposal may be resubmitted after the bib record is revised.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Announcement: National natural landmarks

This list included a proposal for the Slumgullion Earthflow National Natural Landmark in Colorado. According to the National Park Service website, there are almost 600 designated national natural landmark sites, which are so designated because of their “condition, illustrative character, rarity, diversity, and value to science and education.” Although they are nationally designated, the landmarks may be administered by a government at any level of jurisdiction (e.g., federal, municipal) or may remain under private ownership. A random search of GNIS for national natural landmark sites showed that GNIS lists the names of the geographic features, but not the names of the landmarks. For example, Fish Slough in Inyo and Mono counties, California, is listed as a stream, and the Fish Slough National Natural Landmark is not listed.

GNIS is the preferred source for geographic names in the United States, so the fact that GNIS does not list the landmarks is persuasive in determining whether national natural landmarks should be established as such in LCSH. The ownership status of the landmarks is another important factor. The meeting does not wish to research the ownership status of individual national natural landmarks in order to determine whether the BT National parks and reserves—[place] would be appropriate.

Some national natural landmarks are already established in LCSH as geographic features; the aforementioned Fish Slough is established as Fish Slough (Mono County and Inyo County, Calif.) with the BT Rivers—California. Others may be established as parks or reserves and the national natural landmark designation is secondary. For example, LCSH includes the heading Mount Jefferson State Park (N.C.), which has the BTs Natural areas—North Carolina and Parks—North Carolina; the national natural landmark status is not indicated.

This practice of establishing the feature, park, etc., will be continued. Separate headings specific to national natural landmarks will not be accepted for inclusion in LCSH. A proposal to revise the one existing LC subject heading of that type, Irvine Ranch National Natural Landmark (Calif.), will appear on a future tentative list.

SHM H 1925 will be revised to include this decision.

Other decisions

Bastia (France)—History—15th century

Chronological subdivisions are established for generally recognized periods related to a subject or place as shown by authority research, where there is sufficient material being cataloged to warrant it (see H 1647 sec. 2.c; H 620 sec. 3.d). Further, H 1647 states in sec. 2.b that the free-floating century subdivisions are used to “facilitate subject access by time period, primarily for places smaller than countries where chronological subdivisions were previously not established.”

The work being cataloged is a novel set in the year 1491, and the proposal appears to have been made only because there is no free-floating chronological subdivision for the 15th century. The cataloger provided neither research showing that the 15th century is a generally recognized (i.e., significant) period in the history of Bastia, nor evidence that the history of Bastia in the 15th century in particular is the subject of a large number of works.

The proposal was not approved.

Devlet yolu K.K. no. 260 (Turkey)

H 370 sec. 1.d states, “When establishing a new heading that is an intermediate term in a hierarchy, add the new heading as a BT to the authority records for all existing narrower headings ...” The BT references on several existing headings for individual portions of this road need to be revised. The proposal may be resubmitted with the additional proposals.

Erotic drawing, Brazilian

As justification for the proposed qualifier, the citation for the work being cataloged states, “RJ appears to be place of publication, presumably Rio de Janeiro.” Even assuming that assumption to be correct, the place of publication is immaterial because works about the art of one country may be published in another country. The contents of the work should be examined for evidence that the topic is indeed Brazilian erotic drawing. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Feri (Wiccan sect); Faerie Faith (Wiccan sect); Faery-Faith (Wiccan sect)

These proposals originally appeared on the Tentative List for December 2017, and the proposals were marked resubmit. The Summary of Decisions for that list stated,

These proposals do not provide enough information about how the practices and/or beliefs of these sects differ from each other. In addition, the proposal for Feri (Wiccan sect) does not include UFs for all of the variant spellings of the sect name that are provided in the citations.

The proposals should cite sources that clearly indicate how the sects differ from each other, and those sources should be the basis for contrasting scope notes that unequivocally explain the differences; scope notes that state the founder of each sect is insufficient. If such sources cannot be cited, then a single heading covering all variants of the name Faery/Faerie/Feri may be resubmitted instead.

The resubmitted proposals do not include the information requested. The proposals should include information about the deity/deities worshiped, a brief summary of the belief systems, or the like. For example, there appears to be some evidence on the Internet that those in the Feri sect worship the Star Goddess, while Faery-Faith members believe in goblins, elves, etc. The proposals may be resubmitted again.

Gay erotic poetry, Mexican

Only the Spanish-language title of the work being cataloged was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

Grange dîmière (Isère, France)

The information provided in the proposal did not support the choice of geographic qualifier or the BTs. Information supporting those elements of the proposal, in English, should be included. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Horuzlu Han (Turkey)

The form of name proposed as the heading does not appear in the source citations, and the form Horozlu Han appears in the source citations but not in the heading or references. The meeting is unsure whether this is a typo, and if so, which spelling is correct. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Hôtel de Noailles (Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France)

The proposal provided no information in English with which the meeting could evaluate the proposal. The meeting also requests that the BTs be revised to follow the instructions in H 370 sec. 1.b and H 1334 sec. 4.b. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Hotel owners

LCSH includes the heading Hotelkeepers. According to Merriam-Webster, a hotelkeeper is “a proprietor or manager of a hotel.” Rather than approving a separate heading for hotel owners, upward UF references Hotel owners and Hotel proprietors were added to Hotelkeepers under the provisions in H 373 sec. 5. The proposal was not approved.

Indian Crossing Site (Chicopee, Miss.)

Two source citations were provided in this proposal, but each citation included only the author, title, and date of a resource. Information indicating that Indian Crossing is an archaeological site should be added to the proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Kancamagus Highway (N.H.)

The Kancamagus Highway appears to refer to only a 32-mile section of the 57-mile long New Hampshire Route 112. If desired, Route 112 should be established separately and be a BT for the Kancamagus Highway (see H 2098 sec. 3). Regardless of whether Route 112 is separately established, it should not be a UF to Kancamagus Highway because the names are not synonymous. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Kemedzung language

Ethnologue was cited in the proposal, but the proposal does not include all of the variants found there. The meeting also requests that the coding of the 053 be revised to conform to the MARC 21 Format for Authority Data. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Level 2 Award for working as a Door Supervisor within the Private Security Industry (Great Britain)

This proposal is too specific for a general vocabulary such as LCSH. The work can be cataloged effectively by assigning Police, Private—Certification and/or Private security services—Employees—Certification along with Vocationally Related Qualifications (Great Britain) (if this certification falls under the aegis of the VRQs) or Vocational qualifications—Great Britain. The proposal was not approved.

Mumbai Terrorist Attacks, Mumbai, India, 2006

The proposal provided no evidence that the phrases chosen for the heading and UFs are conventional proper names, as required by H 1592. Almanacs, encyclopedias, news reports (both contemporary and retrospective), local histories, and similar sources often show whether an event has acquired a conventional proper name. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Pāṇḍe (Family : Nepal)

This heading was proposed according to RDA guidelines and not according to LCSH rules for family headings, which are contained in H 1631. The LC subject heading Pān̆ḍe family already exists. A UF Pandey (Family : Nepal) was included in the proposal, so a UF Pandey family was added to the existing LC subject heading. The proposal was not necessary.

Penang Hill (Pulau Pinang, Malaysia)

The heading proposed is for a geographic feature, but the research provided refers to Penang Hill as a resort. Parks, resorts, etc., are established separately from geographic features, even if the two entities are coextensive. The meeting is unsure whether a heading for the geographic feature or a heading for the resort is needed. The citations should be revised to clarify this point.

Additional research needs to be undertaken if a heading for the feature is desired. According to Geonet, one of the UFs in the proposal, Bukit Bendera, is a variant name of Government Hill in Pulau Pinang. The coordinates that Geonet lists for Penang Hill and Government Hill are almost identical, and more research is required to determine whether they are the same feature.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Pepin, Lake (Goodhue County and Wabasha County, Minn.)

GNIS lists several variant names that were not included in the proposal, and also indicates that the lake is in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. The BT and UF references should be revised, as should the qualifier. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Puente del Común (Chía, Cundinamarca, Colombia)

Geonet indicates that Puente del Común is a populated place. It should therefore be established in the name authority file. The proposal was not approved.

Pushto periodicals

Only the Pushto-language title of the work being cataloged was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

Reportage literature, Russian

The other subject headings assigned to the work being cataloged indicate that it is about journalism. Reportage literature is not journalism; according to the scope note it is, “a narrative style of literature that features the personal presence and involvement of a human witness.”  In other words, it is a type of belles lettres. If the resource discusses belletristic reportage literature in addition to journalism, the proposal may be resubmitted with a summary that discusses the work’s coverage of belletristic reportage literature.

Riddles, Marathi

The information provided about the work being cataloged states, “anthology of folk songs and riddles, sung by women in Maharashtra.” There are several major languages spoken in Maharashtra in addition to Marathi, including English, Hindi, and Konkani. Stating the geographic emphasis of the work is not sufficient to justify the language qualifier on the heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Riddles, Somali

Only the Somali-language title of the work being cataloged was provided in support of this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

Slumgullion Earthflow National Natural Landmark (Colo.)

The proposed heading was revised to Slumgullion Earthflow (Colo.) in accordance with the decision about national natural landmarks announced above.

Sūdān (Arab tribe)

The citations provided indicate that the Sūdān are spread along the coast of the Arabian (i.e., Persian) Gulf. Five countries border the Persian Gulf, but the BT given refers only to one, the United Arab Emirates. If the tribe is in fact limited to the United Arab Emirates, then the citations should be edited. If the tribe is spread more widely, then the BT should be revised. The proposal may be resubmitted.

White Earthquake, Italy, 1962

The source citations provided do not provide evidence that the August 21, 1962, earthquake in Italy has acquired a conventional name in English. H 1560 sec. 4 indicates that authoritative sources for earthquake names, such as the U.S. Geological Survey, should be consulted for conventional names. A literal translation of the Italian phrase “terremoto bianco” in the title of a single work is not sufficient; a search of Google images is also insufficient to determine a conventional name. If authoritative sources do not provide a conventional name, then the heading Earthquakes—Italy should be assigned. The proposal may be resubmitted if a conventional name is found in authoritative sources.

Wŏlmi Island (Korea)

Geonet was cited in this proposal, but several variant forms of name listed there were not included. Those variant names should be UFs. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Youths’ periodicals, Hebrew

Information from the Hebrew title page of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Musical fiction

This proposal originally appeared on Tentative List 12 (2017). The Summary of Decisions for that list stated the following.

The citations provided in the proposal give several conflicting definitions of musical fiction: works in which music is a theme; works that feature songwriting and performance; and works written in musical language. The meeting suggests that standard reference sources in the field of literature be consulted for a generally accepted definition, and that the information found in those reference sources be used as the basis for a scope note. The proposal may be resubmitted.

The resubmitted proposal did not include any standard sources that give a generally accepted definition of musical fiction. Instead, the citations that were added only compound the problem noted when the proposal was originally submitted: that musical fiction can refer to works in which music is a theme; works that feature songwriting and performance; and works written in musical language.
Therefore, the proposal continues to show that “musical fiction” does not have a unified definition. The proposal was not approved.
