PSD policy specialist responsible for this list: J. Young

CLASSIFICATION

BM198.56.R23

This classification proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Rachmastrivka Hasidim for details.

DT367.45.J33

In accordance with the decision on the related subject proposal, Jabartī (African people), this classification proposal was revised to DT367.45.M87. See below for details about the subject proposal.

[HE6186-6186.5]; HE6186; HE6186.5.A-Z

Anticipating that there are unlikely to be a large number of biographies of postage stamp designers, the meeting prefers to classify biographies with the subject in HE6184.D4 instead of creating separate biography numbers for them. The proposals were not approved.

LF309.57

Educational institutions limited to a specific field are classified with the field. This proposal is for an art academy, which should be classified in N332.A2-Z. The proposal was not approved.

PN6519.N33

This proposal for Ndau proverbs was originally submitted in conjunction with the subject proposal Proverbs, Ndau and appeared on tentative lists 1711 and 1802. The summaries of decisions for both tentative lists stated that the classification proposal could not be considered until a resubmitted subject proposal includes information in English, per guidelines in H 202.

The subject proposal has not been revised and resubmitted. Until it is revised, this classification proposal will not be considered. The classification proposal may be resubmitted with a revised and resubmitted subject proposal.

PQ1411.A26

The work being cataloged appears to be a critical edition of the literary works of two authors. F 634 states that a collection of the works of two authors is to be classified as a collection, and not with the works of one of those authors. The work should be classified in the range PQ1307-1339, collections of Old French poetry. The proposal was not approved.

PQ2623.E4287

It appears that François Le Lionnais was a literary critic, chemical engineer, and chess player, not a literary author. The work being cataloged is a biography and should be classified with the biographies of one of those classes of persons or in CT1018.A-Z8, national biography of France, per F 275 sec. 5. The proposal was not approved.

PQ6140.M34

The subject headings assigned to the work being cataloged indicate that it is a Spanish literary collection about the Mágina Mountains in Spain. The subdivision –Literary collections is assigned to works that are not limited to a particular literary form (e.g., poetry, drama, fiction).
The classification number proposed is for literary criticism about the depiction of the Mágina Mountains in Spanish fiction. The meeting requests that the cataloger reexamine the work to determine 1. whether it is limited to a particular literary form, and 2. whether it is literary criticism or a collection of literature.

A proposal appropriate to the contents of the work and consistent with the subject headings assigned may be resubmitted.

RA781.63

The meeting does not wish to specify a type of exercise equipment in a hierarchy for types of exercises. The proposal was not approved.

TX840.S6

The meeting wishes to continue the longstanding practice of classifying works about slow cooking in TX827. The caption for TX827 was adjusted to include slow cooking to reflect this decision. In addition, a reference from TX840.S+, slow cooking, was made to TX827. The proposal was not approved.

VA667.P6

VA667.A-Z is an alphabetical list of countries. This proposal for the Philippines was not necessary, per F 350 sec. 2.

P-PZ20 81.G39

The history and criticism of gay erotic poetry has been classified consistently with criticism of erotic poetry in general. Erotic poetry is at 81.E76 in Table P-PZ20. The proposal was not approved.

P-PZ22 10.E36

Based on an online summary, the work being cataloged appears to be about nature and ecology in literature, as examined through the lens of ecocriticism. It does not appear to be about the depiction of ecocriticism in literature, as this proposal would suggest. The work should be assigned the subject headings Ecology in literature, Nature in literature, and one or more headings for the language and/or nationality of the literature, and then classified likewise. It may be necessary to submit a proposal for the classification number chosen.
If the online summary is misleading and the work is about how ecocriticism is depicted in literature, then the proposal may be resubmitted with information from the work that supports the proposal. Otherwise, the proposal was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

                        H 1154, Languages
                                    $x Periphrasis

                        H 1159, Military services
                                    $x Coxwains1

            Announcement:

Qualifiers in headings for individual Kurd, Arab, and Berber groups

In LCSH, the general policy is to qualify headings for individual ethnic groups by the adjective for the continent, region, or country of the group, followed by the word people (e.g., Aro (African people); Chrau (Vietnamese people)). Practice for Kurds, Arabs, and Berbers has been mixed, however, with some being qualified by ([Arab, Berber, Kurdish] tribe) and others by ([Arab, Berber, Kurdish] people). Going forward, all new headings of this type will be qualified according to the latter formulation.

Catalogers making proposals to edit existing headings for another reason (e.g., to add another UF reference) should also propose that the heading be revised if necessary to follow the new guidance.  The meeting requests that catalogers not submit proposals merely to revise headings, and that they not purposely seek out headings to which other revisions can be proposed, solely to justify changing the heading.  Instead, LC will undertake a project to systematically revise existing headings whose qualifiers include the word tribe.

            Other decisions:

Anti-Sikh Riots, India, 1984

According to H 1592, major events that have acquired a conventional name in English may be established as phrase headings. The proposal provided only a Wikipedia citation as evidence that this riot has a conventional name. H 202 sec. 1.b states that crowdsourced sites such as Wikipedia are not considered to be authoritative when proposing subject headings. If authoritative sources that support a conventional name for this event can be found and cited, then the proposal may be resubmitted. Otherwise, the heading Riots—[place] should be assigned.

Autobiographical fiction, Bulgarian

Only the Bulgarian-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

Bourquin family

H 1631 sec. 3.a states that the nationality or location of the family should be provided in the citation for the work being cataloged. This proposal did not include that information. The proposal may be resubmitted along with the proposal for Bourque family, which included a related term to the proposed heading.

Bridger National Forest (Wyo.)

The source citations in the proposal correctly indicated that GNIS lists three variant names for this forest, but not all of those names were given as UFs. The proposal may be resubmitted with UFs for each of the variant names.

Comparative literature—Classical and medieval

It appears that the work being cataloged is about classical influences on medieval, early modern, and contemporary civilization, viewed in part through an examination of the ways that classical texts have been received by later cultures. The proposed subject heading, which would be assigned to works that compare classical literature to medieval literature, is not appropriate to the work.

The work can be assigned the headings Civilization, Medieval—Classical influences and Civilization, Modern—Classical influences. The latter would need to be proposed.
Finally, the work was classified in CB358, which is a “General special” number. This work does not fall into any of the three specific circumstances under which General special numbers may be assigned, per CSM F 290. The work should be classified in CB351.

The proposal was not approved.

Crivella family; Foch family

Source citations should include information in English per H 202, and H 1631 states that the location and/or nationality of the family should be provided in the citation for the work being cataloged. This proposal provided information only in Spanish, and that information does not include the location and/or nationality of the family. The proposals may be resubmitted.

Eagle Airways Viking G-AHPM Crash, Norway, 1961

The heading proposed is not a conventional name for the crash, but instead appears to be a constructed phrase that incorporates the name of the airline and the model name of the aircraft. The heading Aircraft accidents—Norway should be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.

Foss Reservoir (Mass.); Foss Reservoir Watershed (Mass.)

The GNIS citation in the proposal for the reservoir included only one of the five variant names listed by GNIS. Each of the variant names should be provided in the citation and given as UFs. The proposal for the watershed may be resubmitted with a revised and resubmitted proposal for the reservoir.

Gagauz newspapers

According to H 1920, headings in the form [nationality or ethnicity] newspapers are assigned to works about newspapers. The work being cataloged not about newspapers; it is an individual general newspaper without a topical focus. If the newspaper contains substantive information about a specific place and/or activities occurring in the place, then it may be assigned a heading in the form [place]—Newspapers; headings of this type should not be assigned merely to bring out the place of publication. If the newspaper does not include substantive information about a place, it should be treated as a general or amorphous work and not assigned any subject headings (H 180 sec. 1). The proposal was not necessary.

Gay erotic poetry, Mexican

The information provided in the citation for the work being cataloged does not indicate that the poetry being examined is Mexican and therefore does not support the qualifier chosen for the heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal axis

This proposal does not appear to have been completed before it was submitted for review. The only information provided was, “Dooley, R. The effect of Estrogen, Coumestrol, Triclosan, and ICI 182,780 on GnRH Secretion in GT1-7 Cells, c2017,” which does not support the proposed heading or references. H 202 indicates that authoritative sources need to be consulted and cited, and those sources should support the choice of heading and references as well as provide a description or definition of the concept being proposed. In addition, the proposal must have at least one BT, per H 370. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Image (Philosophy) in literature; Representation (Philosophy) in literature

Only the French-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support these proposals. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the headings being proposed.

Jabartī (African people)

According to the citations provided, Jabartī is a collective word for Muslims from the Horn of Africa, who comprise a variety of ethnic groups and speak a variety of languages. The heading Muslims—Horn of Africa should be assigned. The proposal was not approved.

Japanese fiction (English)

The work being cataloged is an individual work of fiction, to which form headings are not assigned (see H 1790 sec. 4). The proposal was not necessary.

Lakhmīyūn (Arab tribe)

One of the UFs provided, Lakhm (Arab tribe), is an exact match for an established heading. The meeting requests that more research be done to determine whether the existing heading refers to the same tribe that the proposed heading does. If it does, the existing heading should be updated. If not, then the proposal for the Lakhmīyūn may be resubmitted with information showing that the two groups are indeed different.

Leghold traps—Law and legislation

The meeting does not wish to authorize individual headings for laws about specific types of animal traps. The work may be cataloged with the headings Animal traps—Law and legislation and Leghold traps. The proposal was not approved.

Mala Z͡Hytomyrsʹka (Kiev, Ukraine); Velyka Z͡Hytomyrsʹka (Kiev, Ukraine)

Only the Ukrainian-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support these proposals. The proposals may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the headings being proposed.

Oluluyia languages; Logooli language

Ethnologue lists Oluluyia as a macrolangauge of the Bantu language, and it appears that this proposal was made only to insert a level of hierarchy; there was no indication that there is a work about the Oluluyia languages being cataloged. The meeting considers the additional level of hierarchy to be unnecessary, considering the lack of a work needing the heading. The proposal for Oluluyia languages was not approved.

Nine additional proposals were made to change the BT Bantu languages on existing headings. That was the only change in the revision proposal for Logooli language, and that proposal was not approved. The other eight proposals included other revisions, and approved changes to those records are indicated on the approved list.

The meeting again requests that catalogers who wish to undertake projects consult with PSD first. Doing so saves the time of catalogers and policy specialists alike.

Proverbs, Songhai

The classification number included in the subject proposal must be proposed. The subject proposal may be resubmitted with a classification proposal.

Rachmastrivka Hasidim

The UF Raḥmasṭriṿḳa Hasidim is not supported by a citation, and the form presented in the citation for the work being cataloged is not provided as a UF. The meeting does not know whether this is due to a Romanization issue or a typographical error, or something else. The record should be reviewed and edited as necessary. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Scholia

This proposal was made to expand the use of the free-floating subdivision –Scholia to include titles of works in addition to names of individual persons. There are scholia for both literary and nonfiction works, and the meeting could not find a precedent in LCSH for a free-floating subdivision used under titles of nonfiction works. It is beneficial to keep the cataloging of scholia consistent regardless of the content or discipline of the work. The proposal was not approved.

Transition (Gender)

This proposal was made to revise the existing heading Sex change to Transition (Gender). The existing scope note for Sex change – which was unchanged in the proposal – states, “Here are entered works on the surgical and hormonal alteration of a person’s biological sex characteristics.” Transition is not an equivalent concept, because transition involves the overall social and psychological process of going through life in a different gender, and may or may not include hormone therapy or surgery.  The citations provided in the proposal made the distinction between the two concepts clear. If a heading is needed to catalog a work on the social and psychological processes of transition, then a proposal may be made for a separate heading. The proposal was not approved.

Talysh poetry

A heading for Talysh literature must be proposed along with Talysh poetry, because Talysh literature must appear as a BT on Talysh poetry. In addition, the meeting suggests that Folk poetry, Talysh may be a better heading for the work being cataloged, based on the information provided in the proposal. If it is, then Talysh literature, Talysh poetry, and Folk poetry, Talysh must all be proposed. Two or three proposals may be resubmitted.

Terra Indígena Igarapé do Caucho (Brazil)

The name chosen as the basis for the heading does not appear in the source citations. A longer form of name, Terra Indigena Kaxinawa do Igarapé, appears in the citation of the work being cataloged; the website citation provided describes the status and location of the reservation but does not give its name. If the reservation is known by multiple names, one name should be chosen as the basis for the heading and the other name(s) should be UFs – and all of the names should be supported by the citations. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Testimony (Theory of knowledge) in literature

The heading proposed would be assigned to works about the depiction in literature of the philosophical idea of knowledge based on testimony. The English information provided in the proposal states that the work being cataloged is “about testimonial literature.”  Testimonial literature is a UF to Reportage literature, which is defined as “a narrative style of literature that features the personal presence and involvement of a human witness.”  Judging by a Google translation of the online summary, the work seems to be about reportage literature. The other subject headings assigned should also be reexamined, since that headings in the form [topic] in literature refer to the depiction of the topic.

The proposal may be resubmitted with a fuller summary of the work if it really is about the literary depiction of the philosophical idea of testimony. Otherwise, the proposal was not necessary.

Yankelevich family

H 1631 sec. 3.a states that the nationality or location of the family should be provided in the citation for the work being cataloged. This proposal did not include that information. The proposal may be resubmitted

Youths’ periodicals, Hebrew

The citation in the proposal indicates that the work being cataloged is a Hebrew newspaper for children and youth.  The heading being proposed would be assigned to works about youth periodicals in general in the Hebrew language.
If the newspaper contains substantive information about a specific place and/or activities occurring in the place, then it may be assigned a heading in the form [place]—Newspapers; headings of this type should not be assigned merely to bring out the place of publication. If the newspaper does not include substantive information about a place, it should be treated as a general or amorphous work and not be assigned any subject headings (H 180 sec. 1).

The proposal was not necessary.

Zinavage family

The nationality or location of the family should be included in the citation for the work being cataloged (see H 1631 sec. 3.a), but was not. Further, the substantial difference in spelling between the proposed heading the spellings of the UFs – Zieniewicz family and Ziniewicz family – leads the meeting to wonder whether the change in spelling is due to immigration. If so, then the names should be established separately and connected with RT references (sec. 3.c).  One or two proposals may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Best practices

“Best practice” is not a form or a genre. According to Merriam-Webster, a best practice is “a procedure that has been shown by research and experience to produce optimal results and that is established or proposed as a standard suitable for widespread adoption.” Collins dictionary says it is “the way of running a business or providing a service that is recognized as correct or most effective.”
The phrase “best practices” tends to be present in the titles of the documents, which are in the form of a manual or an FAQ. The appropriate genre/form term, such as Handbooks and manuals, Style books, or FAQs, may be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.

MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCETERMS

Changes were made as indicated on the approved list.
