GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT

North Macedonia

This list includes subject heading and classification number revisions that were made to reflect the Republic of Macedonia’s new name, North Macedonia. Revisions that do not affect the class numbers themselves will be completed offlist.

CLASSIFICATION

[DR1911-1916]; DR1912

These proposals may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Montenegro—History—2006- for details.

DS528.2.K39

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Kayan (Southeast Asian people) for details.

DT73.F87

Antiquities from a particular place should be classified with the place. Fusṭāṭ is a city section of Cairo, which should class in DT150.5.A-Z. The proposal was not approved.

LG615.K55

The work being cataloged does not appear to be about the university itself, and it should therefore be classed with the topic, but the topic of the work is vague. The university appears to be dedicated to teaching Christian theology and philosophy and as such, it is not a full university.  If the work has no clear topic, it could be classified in A. Alternatively, the work could be classified with the study and teaching of Christian theology or philosophy.  The proposal was not approved.

PL957.5.L45

Legal stories is a form and the work should be classified with special forms of literature in PL980.2+ for which a proposal will be necessary. The proposal may be resubmitted.

PL6499

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Cook Islands Maori imprints, (etc.) for details.

PM8784

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Slovan (Artificial language) for details.

TK5103.25

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under 5G mobile communications systems for details.

KL-KWX9 .74

The cataloger’s summary of this work states that the work is a report of mining rights in Shanxi Sheng, China, which is reflected in the subject cataloging. It is therefore unclear how this proposal to add a number for “Technology” relates to the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resubmitted.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

                        H 1161, Musical instruments
                                    $x Methods (Tangos)1

            Other decisions:

5G mobile communication systems

The only information provided from the work being cataloged was the title, “Huawei and Australia's 5G network.” The meaning of the term “5G mobile communication systems” may be self-evident at this time, but it may not be as familiar in the future. More information from the work cat should be provided to clarify the relationship of the work being cataloged to the proposed heading. Additionally, a definition or fuller description of 5G such as the one on TechTarget (https://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/definition/5G) should be provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Abandoned buildings—Law and legislation

The only information provided from the work being cataloged was the title, “Vacant and problem properties,” which does not support the use of the subdivision –Law and legislation in the proposal. Information that the work cat is about the law pertaining to abandoned buildings should be added. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Arkansas River

The proposal was submitted without a citation to a work being cataloged. SHM H 202 sec. 1.a.(1) states that a citation to a work being cataloged must be included. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Authentic leadership

The proposal did not include any information in the citations to define the term and justify the scope note. The cataloger should provide a definition and/or description, preferably from an authoritative source such as a management dictionary. The description should include information about what makes “authentic leadership” different from leadership in general or any of the other defined types of leadership. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Autodesk Alias Automotive 2013 software

Individual software packages should be established in the name authority file (see H 405, Group 1; and H 2070). The proposal was not approved.

Note that the narrower terms currently in LCSH under the heading Computer software are for types or categories of software, not for individual software packages.

Badjid family

The proposal contained no information from the work cat regarding the location of the family as required in H 1631 sec. 3. This information is required because, among other factors, without location information it would be impossible to determine if a family name changed as a result of immigration. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Band-i Barq-i Darūntah (Afghanistan)

Dams should be established as MARC tag 151, not 110. Also, the Pashto in the 3rd 670, which is presumably the basis of the second UF, should be romanized. Finally, the BT proposed does not match the information in the citation. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Children’s literature, Kumyk

Only the Russian title of the work being cataloged was provided in this proposal. The cataloger should provide information from the work translated into English or a brief summary of the content of the work in English that shows the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Church work with autistic people

The title, “High-functioning Autism, Faith Formation, and Spiritual Growth,” was the only information provided in support of this proposal. The title does not fully express the reason that the proposed heading was chosen.  The cataloger should provide information from the work being cataloged that shows that the subject is church work with autistic people. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Church work with Generation X

Only the title, “Reassessing the Relationship between Generation X and the 21st Century Institutional Church,” was provided, and it does not show a clear relationship to the proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Delimitation of outer space

The cataloger did not provide information from the work cat that defines or describes the term, nor was support provided for the first UF. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Finnair Aero Flight AY217 Crash, Finland, 1963

No evidence could be found that “Finnair Aero Flight AY217 Crash” is a conventional name, and no other evidence could be found that there is any other conventional name for this crash. The heading Aircraft accidents—Finland should be used instead. The proposal was not approved.

France—Civilization—Japanese influences

Only the French title of this work was provided. The cataloger should provide information in English that shows the relationship of the work being cataloged to the proposed heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Gilets jaunes movement

Only a Wikipedia citation was provided to support this proposal. SHM H 202 gives guidance on authority research for subject heading proposals, and states that crowdsourced web sites and services are not generally considered to be authoritative when proposing subject headings. Further, the heading needs to be in English if a conventional form of the name of the movement exists in English. The proposal should also document usage of the term. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (Wash.)

The proposal was made to add the broader term Radioactive wastes—Vitrification—Washington (State). Instance, class/class member, and whole/part are the hierarchical relationships expressed in the choice of broader terms (see H 370). However, this plant is neither an instance of vitrification of radioactive wastes, nor is it a class member of vitrification, nor a part of vitrification. The proposal was not approved.

Intown (Paris, France)

Information in English should be provided from the work being cataloged to support the qualifier (i.e., provide the location of this building) and to support the BT (i.e., identify the type of building). The proposal may be resubmitted.

Iran—History—Allied occupation, 1941-1946

Only one bib was reported for BFM, but presumably more than one of the 287 bibs cataloged with Iran—History—Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, 1941-1979 is about the occupation. Each of those bibs must be examined. Alternately, a search combining the heading for the time period with the heading for the World War II might produce relevant results. There is precedent for this heading, but it may be difficult to determine which works are really about the occupation itself, as opposed to works about Iran during the time period of occupation. The cataloger should report records necessary for BFM. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Iran—History—Famine, 1942-1943

Encyclopaedia Iranica has a long article detailing the famines that Iran has experienced over time, and although it lists others from the 20th century, it does not list one from 1942-1943. Britannica does not say anything about a famine in the 1940s in its article on Iran.  The cataloger needs to find a reference source that specifically supports the author’s contention that there was a famine in 1942 and 1943, and it needs to say something more than “famine spread and many people died.”  Otherwise, the cataloger should assign Iran—History—Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, 1941-1979 and/or Famines—Iran—History—20th century. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Japanese publications

Works about Japanese language publications should be entered under Japanese imprints, which is an existing heading. Also, for a list of works published in Japan, the existing heading Japan—Imprints should be used. The proposal was not approved.

Kayan (Southeast Asian people)

Joshua Project says that the Padaung of Burma are also called Kayan. There is already a heading for the Padaung. The cataloger should investigate whether they are in fact the same people and if so propose UFs instead of a new heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Khalaf family

The proposal contained no information from the work cat regarding the location of the family as required in H 1631 sec. 3. This information is required because, among other factors, without location information it would be impossible to determine if a family name has been changed as a result of immigration. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Lamentation Mountain (Conn.)

GNIS was not cited as required in H 690, and there was no usage provided to support the UF. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Laut Island (Kalimantan Selatan, Indonesia)

Geonet was cited in this proposal, but the variant form of name listed there was not included. The variant name should be a UF. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Lesbians’ writings, American—Hispanic American authors

There is no precedent for establishing author group subdivisions under inverted headings for minor forms of American literature. The cataloger should assign Lesbians’ writings, American with American literature—Hispanic American authors. The proposal was not approved.

Meithei (Asian people)

If the cataloger wants to change this heading, proposals to revise all of its derivative headings, such as Women, Meitheis, should be submitted as well. Also, the proposal should contain a UF for the earlier form of the heading. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Military postcards

The work uses postcards to show the history of the Army Service Corps in World War I. It is not about military postcards. The proposal was not necessary.

Montenegro—History—2006-

H 620 sec. 3.d.(3) recommends that when a new open-date span is being proposed, the cataloger should consider closing the date on an existing open-date span. This would seem to be a perfect situation to close the date span in Montenegro—History—1992- . In addition, the cataloger should consider making parallel proposals for Serbia. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Cook Islands Maori imprints; Cook Islands Maori language; Cook Islands Maori language—Dictionaries; Hymns, Cook Islands Maori; Picture dictionaries, Cook Islands Maori; Proverbs, Cook Islands Maori; Songs, Cook Islands Maori

Authoritative reference sources are mixed on the preferred name of the language.  The UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger and MultiTree both call it Rarotongan, while Ethnologue calls it Cook Islands Maori. Most importantly, the ISO 639-3 Registration Authority website indicates that either Cook Islands Maori or Rarotongan is acceptable.  Therefore, revising the heading from Rarotongan language to Cook Islands Maori language, and the revisions to six other headings, is change for change’s sake. The proposals were not necessary.

Cook Islands Maori literature

The citation for the literary collection being cataloged indicates that one of the works in the collection is in Rarotongan/Cook Islands Maori. H 1775 indicates that form headings that merely represent the language are not assigned to individual literary works. The proposal was not necessary.

Şıxlinski family

Neither the form of the name selected for the heading, nor the first UF are supported in the information provided. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Skalistērēs family

The proposal contained no information from the work cat regarding the location of the family as required in H 1631 sec. 3. This information is required because, among other factors, without location information it would be impossible to determine if a family name has been changed as a result of immigration. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Slovan (Artificial language)

The citation to the work being cataloged includes the capitalized phrases “Unified Slavonic Speech” and “Unified Slovan Language,” but they were not presented as UFs. Are they phrases in running text (and therefore not variant names and do not get UFs), or are they variant names (and thus need UFs)? The proposal may be resubmitted.

Tigrinya drama

There is apparently one play in Tigrinya in a larger collection of plays. H 1780 states that individual plays by a single author are not assigned nonspecific form headings. The proposal was not necessary.

UG NX 8.0 software

Individual software packages should be established in the name authority file (see H 405, Group 1; and H 2070). The proposal was not approved.

Note that the narrower terms listed under the heading Computer software are for types or categories of software, not for individual software packages.

United States—Civilization—Czech influences

The citation for the work being cataloged does not provide information to support the proposed heading. In particular, the citation does not name the influencer, nor does it name the place being influenced. The proposal may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Biographical fiction

Biographical fiction is by definition not a nonfiction biography; therefore, addition of the BT Biographies is not appropriate. The proposal was not approved.

Book of shadows

There is a difference between books of shadows and grimoires. A book of shadows is a personal record of spells, etc., and includes private notes, while a grimoire is a book of spells, etc., for use by many people. However, LCGFT is a general vocabulary, and the terms are so close in meaning that even some Wiccans and witches use them interchangeably. There is precedent in LCGFT for making upward UFs in cases where various types of documents or materials are too specific for LCGFT so they are assigned as UFs under another closely related term. (For examples, see Papal documents or Legislative materials.) Therefore, “Books of shadows” will be added as a UF to Grimoires.

The proposal was not approved.

Exercise music

The meeting acknowledges the usefulness of this term but the proposal lacks a definition. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Meditation music

The cataloger provided usage, but not a definition or description. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Notebooks

There are probably innumerable ways and innumerable situations in which a notebook can be used. The meeting felt that adding an upward reference for each situation would be impractical. The proposal was not approved.

Pathographies; Graphic pathographies

Pathographies would be used for works that are biographies of people with medical problems and disabilities. The genre/form term Biographies and subject headings appropriate to the subject matter should be assigned instead.

Likewise, graphic pathographies should be handled by assigning the genre/form term Biographical comics and subject headings appropriate to the subject matter.

The proposals were not approved.

Post-punk music

The fact that LCSH includes a heading for post-punk music does not automatically mean that the same term will be added to LCGFT. The cataloger should provide a definition or description from an authoritative source. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Regency fiction

According to the 670s, regency fiction can be “proper” fiction like Jane Austen’s or sexually steamy fiction like Amanda Quick’s. It is set during the 19th century, or the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is set in England or perhaps in Europe. It can be a romance, detective fiction, or military fiction. It usually features “a great deal of intelligent, fast-paced dialog between the protagonists.”

The reference sources agree that the works are historical fiction, and that they tend to focus on the manners of upper-crust society. For that, LCGFT includes the terms Historical fiction and Novels of manners. The scope note for Novels of manners reads: Realistic fiction that describes in detail the customs, habits, values, and expectations of a particular society. The citations say: 1. If, as in the writings of Jane Austen, Edith Wharton, and John P. Marquand, a realistic novel focuses on the customs, conversation, and ways of thinking and valuing of a particular social class, it is often called a novel of manners. 2. work of fiction that re-creates a social world, conveying with finely detailed observation the customs, values, and mores of a highly developed and complex society; the conventions of the society dominate the story, and characters are differentiated by the degree to which they measure up to the uniform standard, or ideal, of behaviour or fall below it.

“Regency fiction” will be added as a UF to Historical fiction and to Novels of manners. The proposal was not approved.

Relaxation music

The cataloger provided a description but not a definition of relaxation music. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Silver fork fiction

The proposed term is too specific to be included in LCGFT. The genre-form term Novels of manners may be assigned instead. The proposal was not approved.
