CLASSIFICATION

DS432.L223

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Labbā (South Asian people) for details.

PH3189.B83

This number would be for a collection of prose about Budapest, but the subject headings assigned indicate that the work is literary criticism about Budapest as depicted in the literature of multiple languages. The cataloger should determine which situation is accurate and adjust the subject headings or the classification as appropriate. The proposal may be resubmitted.

PK3794.G87

The author’s name, Gurusvayaṃbhūnātharāma, should be established in the Name Authority File (NAF) before it can be used in a caption. The proposal may be resubmitted.

PN6519.G856

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Proverbs, Gungu for details.

PN6519.T284

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Proverbs, Talinga-Bwisi for details.

DS-DX5 .x465

The subject headings assigned to the work being cataloged are Kurds--History and Kurds--Arabian Peninsula--History. The number assigned in the proposing library’s catalog is DS59.K86, which is for individual elements in the population of the Middle East. DS59.K86 does not fit the subject headings, but it would need a proposal in DS59.A-Z, not in Table DS-DX5. If the subject analysis is correct, then the number should be DS218.K+, Kurds on the Arabian Peninsula. Again, it would need a proposal, but not in Table DS-DX5. If a proposal really is needed for Table DS-DX5, then Kurds should be at .x46.K+, not .x465. The cataloger should determine what is really wanted and needed, and make a proposal for it – and make it clear in the proposal the reason that the proposal is being made.

KL-KWX4 860.4

The concept of Private autonomy is a distinct, definable concept in law, and thus, it should be represented by a subject heading. The classification proposal may be resubmitted along with a subject proposal for Private autonomy.

           Other decisions:

Art of Azerbaijani Aşıqs

The proposed heading perhaps was intended to be a topic, but it was inappropriately tagged as a title. The Wikipedia citation refers to the UN Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which has a section that is headed with the caption “Art of Azerbaijani Ashiq.” As it is cited in the work cat citation and in the Wikipedia citation, the phrase “art of Azerbaijani aşıqs” appears to be simply a phrase in running text, not an appellation.

Additionally, the proposed heading was not assigned to the work being cataloged. The work cat can be adequately cataloged with the existing headings Âşıks and/or Folk poetry, Azerbaijani and/or Folk music with appropriate geographic subdivision.

The proposal was not approved.

Aşıq poetry, Azerbaijani

Âşıks (the authorized LCSH form) were Middle Eastern equivalents to Western European minstrels and troubadours. LCSH does not include headings for troubadour or minstrel poetry, so it should not include one for Âşık poetry, either. The cataloger should assign the heading Azerbaijani poetry, with chronological subdivision if desired, along with the heading Âşıks.

The proposal was not approved.

Azul (Argentina : Military base)—Siege, 1974

The heading for the military base has to be established in the NAF before this proposal can be approved.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Bayatı (Maqām)

The meeting found this proposal confusing for the following reasons. The second 670 contradicts itself, saying that Ussak is another name for Bayati, and in the same breath, Ussak is different from Bayati. The main Wikipedia page for maqam lists Bayati as a family of 6 maqam, one of which is called Bayati, and none of which seem to be related in any way to the term Ussak. Rather than attempting to establish a specific maqam heading, a more practical approach would be to assign Maqam--[place].

The proposal was not approved.

Capitals (Architecture), Maurya

The qualifier, Maurya, on this proposal is representative of the time period of the Mauryan dynasty. In LCSH, excluding headings for Chinese, Japanese and Korean, headings for architectural features or details are not qualified by such narrow time periods. The practice has been to assign a heading for the architectural feature (e.g., Capitals (Architecture)) and postcoordinate with a heading for the architectural period (e.g., Architecture, Mauryan, (approved on this list)).

The proposal was not approved.

De Carli family

Dictionary of American Family Names says that De Carli is a variant of Carli. Carli family is an existing heading in LCSH. Variants and references were added to the existing heading.

The proposal was not approved.

Drago-Sas family

The proposal was submitted to add the UF Draho-Sas family to the existing heading. If the variant spelling is to be added, the variant, Draho, should be on the heading Drago family, not on the compound name heading.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

General Strike, Spain, 1988

This proposal was resubmitted from list 1907, but no changes have been made to the proposal to comply with the requirements laid out in the Summary of Decisions, which said: “Information from the work being cataloged should be provided in English explaining the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed. A single citation to Wikipedia is not sufficient. The proposal may be resubmitted.”

The proposal may be resubmitted with additional information in the 670 for the work cat, including a description in English of the subject of the work being cataloged. The resubmitted proposal should also contain an additional source that is not Wikipedia, perhaps an article from a newspaper or periodical.

Kano family

When the Japanese government gave Japanese people the opportunity to change their surnames, Shunichi Nekomoto/Kano changed the family surname from Nekomoto to Kano. This does not mean that all families throughout history with the surname Nekomoto changed their surname to Kano. The proposal represents two separate surnames, Kano and Nekomoto. The names should be represented as two separate subject headings.

The proposal may be resubmitted along with a separate proposal for Nekomoto family.

Labbā (South Asian people)

The only substantive information that the cataloger provided was from Wikipedia, which is not considered authoritative for proposal purposes. That article is particularly problematic, because it was flagged as needing additional citations for verification. The cataloger did provide a citation to Joshua Project, but the citation is to an article on the Tamil that mentions an ethnic group spelled Labbai, a different spelling than the one provided in the citation to the work being cataloged. The difference may be caused by romanization, but given the number of ethnic groups in South Asia, and the surprisingly high number of separate groups with the same or similar names, the meeting is hesitant to make the assumption that the Labbā and the Labbai are the same people without more evidence. The cataloger can clear some of this up by providing information that is probably contained in the work being cataloged. The work should be checked to see what it says about the location of the group, variant names for the group, and the group’s origin.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Mahican Indians

The cataloger did not provide any evidence that Muhhekaneew -- used in a title published in 1823 – is a variant name for Mahican. The spelling is so different that some direct evidence from an authoritative source should be cited. In addition, the RT Moravian Indians should remain as an RT. The heading Moravian Indians is for Indians that were converted to Christianity by Moravian missionaries; it is not an ethnic group. It makes some sense to have the heading Moravian Indians because works discuss them that way, and it makes sense to lead users to the heading, but it should not be a BT/NT situation.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Mahican language

The cataloger did not provide any evidence that Muhhekaneew -- used in a title published in 1823 – is a variant name for Mahican. The spelling is so different that some direct evidence from an authoritative source should be cited. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Musical instruments, Uighur

In LCSH, musical instruments are identified by their country of origin. The scope note under the heading Musical instruments says: For works about musical instruments of an individual ethnic group, additional subject entry is made under the heading [ethnic group]--[place]--Music. The cataloger should assign the headings Musical instruments—Turkey and Uighur (Turkic people)—Music.

The proposal was not approved.

Nineteen seventy-nine, A.D.

According to the cataloging, the work is about popular culture in Japan in the 20th century. As such, it is not eligible for a general century heading, per SHM H 620 sec. 2.c., which says that general headings for centuries, years, and other periods are assigned only to general works on the time period not limited to specific topics. The proposal was not necessary. Peep shows The proposal sought to add UFs for Stanhopes and Stanho-scopes to the existing heading Peep shows. Stanhopes (aka Stanho-scopes) are the devices used to view peep shows, similar to Kinetophones and Kinetoscopes, which are RTs to Peep shows. Stanhopes should also be a separate heading, and an RT to Peep shows. Stanhope has several other meanings according to the OED, so the heading will have to be qualified according to the instructions in SHM H 357.

A proposal for Peep shows may be resubmitted along with a separate proposal for Stanhopes.

Ponza Island (Italy)

The cataloger provided only the Italian-language title. The location of the island and the island group to which it belongs should be provided in English to support the BTs.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

Processions, Religious—Catholic Church

This heading is constructed with an existing multiple. The proposal was not necessary. Proverbs, Gungu Only the Gungu-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal.

The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

Proverbs, Talinga-Bwisi

Only the Talinga-Bwisi-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed. Tremont Hotel (Galveston, Tex.) The building name is the same as the name of the organization housed in the building. The heading should be established in the NAF, per the background statement in SHM H 1334.

The proposal was not approved.

Turkizms

The way this heading has been proposed, it is for provincialisms in, and dialects of, the Turkish language. However, the work is about Turkish words that have been borrowed into Western European languages. The heading Europe, Western—Languages—Foreign words and phrases—Turkish should be assigned.

The proposal was not necessary.

Waveney Valley (England)

The Hutchinson Unabridged Encyclopedia has an entry for a Waveney River, which is on the border of Norfolk and Suffolk counties. The cataloger should determine whether this valley is the valley of that river, and make a proposal for the river, if so.

The proposal may be resubmitted.

GENRE/FORM TERMS

Artists’ statements

The Catholic Encyclopedia citation says that in the Ambrosian Rite the Communion is called the Transitorium. LCGFT already includes the term Transitoria (Music). The meeting would like the cataloger to provide information that answers the following questions: Is the proposed term Communions (Music) synonymous with the term Transitoria (Music)? Should the existing term be changed to Communions (Music)? The proposal may be resubmitted.

Flood maps

The proposal should include a definition or description of a flood map, instead of just providing examples. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Goşma (Asıq poetry); Gäraulı (Asıq poetry)

The citation for the works being cataloged do not provide a description or definition of these poetic forms. The only descriptions are from Wikipedia, which is not considered to be authoritative for subject proposal purposes. The cataloger needs to find an authoritative source for each of the forms and/or provide information from the works being cataloged. In addition, the headings, UFs, and BTs are not in the correct format for LCGFT. The cataloger should follow the instructions in genre/form instruction sheets J 160, J 162, J 183, and J 186. The proposals may be resubmitted.

Newspaper indexes

The newspapers are the subject, the form is an index. The cataloger should assign Indexes with an appropriate subject heading. The proposal was not approved.

Periodical indexes

The periodicals are the subject, the form is an index. The cataloger should assign Indexes with an appropriate subject heading. The proposal was not approved.

Student films

The students are the creators, so student films does not constitute a genre. The proposal was not approved.

Trance music

The cataloger provided examples of trance music, but did not provide a definition, so the scope note is unsupported. A definition or clear description of trance music should be provided on which the scope note may be based. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Barong (Music)

This proposal should be resubmitted with a resubmitted proposal for Trance music.
