CLASSIFICATION

[BM321.75-.77] and related proposals

Works on the history of Judaism in Hungary have been classed in BM376.H8-.H82. The meeting would like to continue this practice. The proposals were not approved.

HN831.A25; [HN831.C76]; HN831.D45; HN831.O53

HN831 is subarranged with Table HN101/4, which provides the cutter span .A9-.Z8 for local places. CSM F 350 says that geographic names do not generally need to be proposed and established. The works being cataloged, which are about individual states in Nigeria, should each be assigned cutters based on the names of the states, within the range .A9-.Z8. The proposals were not necessary.

KM88.5.P87

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Law, Pushtun for details.

PL402.9

This proposal may be resubmitted with a resubmitted subject proposal. See below under Brahmi Mongolian alphabet for details.

PR1813.A66-.A663

A note in the proposal indicates that the work consists of a Middle French work along with a Middle English translation. Literary works are classified with the original language, not the language of translation. The proposal was not approved.

PT5409.W66/.W68

It appears that this proposal was intended to establish a new cutter for World War II as a special topic of collections of Dutch literature (PT5409.W68). Instead, the proposal substituted the cutter for World War II for the cutter for women as a special topic (PT5409.W66). In short, a proposal for a new number should have been submitted, not a proposal to revise an existing number.

The meeting would have fixed this technical issue, but it is unclear whether PT5409.W68 is appropriate for the work. The bibliographic record indicates that the work is a general collection of Dutch literature about World War II, but a note in the proposal indicates that the work consists solely of poetry. Dutch poetry about special topics is classified in PT5488.A-Z.

The meeting requests that the work be reexamined and the bibliographic record be revised if necessary. A proposal for a new number in PT5409.A-Z may be resubmitted if the work is a general literary collection. A proposal for a new number in PT5488.A-Z may be resubmitted if the work is a collection of poetry.

Announcement

Black people; White people

Special list 2112a consisted of 157 proposals to revise the headings Blacks and Whites to Black people and White people, respectively, as well as to revise all other headings, scope notes, and references that used the wording Blacks or whites. Research indicated a consistent preference to capitalize Black people, while capitalization of whites or white people was not consistent. Therefore, all uses of “Black people” are capitalized in LCSH, while “white people” is not, unless the word white is the first word of a heading or subdivision.

The meeting thanks the African American SACO Funnel, which consulted with PTCP to initiate and design the project and made the proposals.

Other decisions:

Art—Periodization

The work may be cataloged using the heading Arts—Periodization, which is already established. The proposal was not necessary.

Brahmi Mongolian alphabet

The citations in the proposal should provide information in English that supports the characterization of alphabet, but instead they seem to support the idea that Brahmi Mongolian is a script. In addition, the meeting requests that the BTs and RTs be adjusted to follow the pattern of other Mongolian alphabets that are established in LCSH. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Safe spaces for sexual minorities

The concept of safe spaces must be established before safe spaces for specific classes of persons can be proposed. However, rather than establishing phrase headings such as the one proposed, the meeting prefers to assign a general heading for safe spaces, along with the heading for the class of persons with subdivisions such as –Services for, –Protection, etc. A proposal for the general concept of safe spaces may be resubmitted.

Law, Pushtun

The BTs on this proposal indicate that Pushtun law is customary law of Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, the authority record for Pushtuns indicates that Pushtuns reside in Afghanistan and South Asia, and class numbers exist for Pushtuns in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India.

The geographic subdivisions on the BTs for Law, Pushtun should match the geographic subdivisions on the BTs for Pushtuns unless the geographic extent of Pushtun law is different from the geographic extent of the homeland of the Pushtuns. If the latter, then the discrepancy should be explained in the citations on the proposal for Pushtun law. The proposal may be resubmitted.

Opium poppy industry

The opium poppy industry is so intertwined with the opium trade that the meeting prefers to have a single heading to represent both topics. A UF Opium poppy industry was added to the heading Opium trade, which should be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.

Poets, Ethiopian

Only the Amharic-language title of the work being cataloged was provided to support this proposal. The proposal may be resubmitted with information in English that explains the relationship of the work to the heading being proposed.

Torre BBVA Bancomer (Mexico City, Mexico)

SHM H 1334 says, “when a building is known by the same name as the corporate body that occupies it, a corporate name heading is established for the body and that name heading is used as a subject heading for works about either the organization or the building.” Torre BBVA Bancomer is occupied by BBVA Bancomer, so the name heading BBVA Bancomer should be assigned to the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.
