Course Description
This course provides authoritative standardized training in the principles and practices of Library of Congress Classification (LCC). The course includes background on the development and structure of LCC. Emphasis is on basic skills and on application of LCC in areas most often used by generalists. The following topics are included:
- The elements of a call number
- The use of essential LCC documentation and online tools
- Guidance on shelflisting practice
- Special focus on Schedules H (Social Sciences), N (Fine Arts), and P (Language and Literature)
- Local decisions and proposing new class numbers through PCC SACO
Intended Audience
The course is designed to cover basic skills. It will be useful to those who are new to classification using LCC but who have some basic knowledge of cataloging and the MARC 21 formats. While not designed to cover advanced or specialized topics, the course will also be a useful review for experienced catalogers, especially those who supervise or train other catalogers.
