Collection Earth Day 2020 Web Archive

About this Collection

On April 22, 2020, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, which was initiated on April 22, 1970, by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Earth Day events and programs pivoted to the online environment, which resulted in participants joining in a digital Earth Day from home.

Even though Earth Day is now a global movement, this web archive collection will only provide a snapshot of how communities in the United States were celebrating the day. The focus is on digital actions and activities organized by environmental groups; college campuses; civic organizations; and city, state, and federal government. With this collection, we hope to help future researchers answer questions, such as “what were some of the important themes for Earth Day 2020?”

Collection Period: March 2020 to June 2020.

Frequency of Collection: Sites in the collection were targeted for capture weekly.

Languages: Collection material in English.
