    Charlie Parker [Portrait of Charlie Parker, Carnegie Hall, New York, N.Y., ca. 1947]. William P. Gottlieb, photographer. Performing Arts Reading Room , Library of Congress. While in New York, Gerry was deeply affected by Charlie Parker, whose early recordings influenced him, as they did many others, and whose personal encouragement inspired Gerry not only as a composer and arranger, but as a performer.
