Collection Indonesian Elections Web Archive

About this Collection

The Indonesian Elections Web Archive covers the general elections of 2009 and 2019 which included both parliamentary as well as presidential elections, the presidential election of 2014, and the provincial elections of 2018.

With a population of almost 270 million people, Indonesia is the third most populous democratic country in the world. It is also the state with the largest Muslim population in the world, even though there are significant numbers of other religious groups. The multi-ethnic population is dispersed among many islands, and there are many different political parties. Corruption, poverty, and infrastructure are perennial campaign issues in Indonesia, though bio-marine environmental concerns also occupied the minds of voters in 2009. Race and religion are two other constants in Indonesian politics that shape political opinions and platforms. Provincial elections shine a light on local issues and their connection to the center in this vast archipelagic state, and in 2018 were a barometer for the 2019 general elections. Sites harvested in this web archive include campaign and party websites and blogs as well as websites with information about bio-marine environment issues.

Staff from the Library of Congress Jakarta Office and the Asian Division in Washington, D.C. selected the websites and reviewed the archived results.
