Collection Intergovernmental Organizations Web Archive

About this Collection

The Intergovernmental Organizations Web Archive contains a selection of websites of international, regional, and multinational organizations to which member states send official representatives. The collection is not comprehensive but aims to complement and supplement the print publications from intergovernmental organizations that the Library of Congress has long collected, and to provide an ongoing history of the organizations and their activities.

Intergovernmental organizations may publish on any topic, and an array of material, including founding documents and conventions, information about the structure and mission, annual reports, news of current projects, working documents, and press releases can be found on an organization's website. Intergovernmental organizations influence and are influenced by U.S. policy and programs, and they serve as forums for the discussion of international opinion and activities in a variety of areas, such as international law, peacekeeping, health, education, and the environment. As such, the archive will be useful to researchers compiling legislative histories of treaties, investigating the relationships of countries at a particular time, or tracking an organization's position relative to a particular country or cause.

The archive contains websites from the United Nations, including some from the UN family of Specialized Agencies, Other Entities and Bodies, and Related Organizations; the European Union; the World Health Organization; and the Asia-Europe Foundation, among others. Some of the featured resources of the collection include the websites of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), a Specialized Agency headquartered in Paris; the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), a specialized agency headquartered in Vienna; and the World Trade Organization (WTO), a Related Organization headquartered in Geneva.
