Collection Occupational Folklife Project

Cement Workers in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley

This collection consists of 20 occupational folklife oral history interviews conducted by historian Vyta Pivo, who received a 2020 Archie Green Fellowship to document the occupational culture and folklore of cement workers in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley. The Lehigh Valley, a region in central Pennsylvania, is considered “the birthplace of the American cement industry.” The project complements Dr. Pivo’s previous research on the history of concrete and cement in industry and architecture.
