Division 12 – Transportation Equipment and Related Problems
Division 12 of the Office of the Scientific Research and Development (OSRD) was assigned to start, arrange and monitor research investigations in the field of transportation. Working with colleagues from the United Kingdom, Canada, contractors and other divisions, Division 12 worked on 34 projects and 100 sub-projects. Their contributions included the development of DUKW and other amphibious vehicles and tanks as well as doctrine and training programs for amphibious warfare. The Division also developed the cargo carrying M-28 and M-29 Weasel, and made improvements to vehicle parts, such as aircraft brakes and tank compasses, among other activities.
After the war, the divisions of the OSRD prepared Summary Technical Reports presenting overviews of their research, the problems they encountered and the progress achieved.
