List of Items in the Omar Ibn Said Collection
The Omar Ibn Said Collection is a 2017 acquisition of the African Section of the African and Middle Eastern Division of the Library of Congress. It contains 42 items. In the center of this collection is the autobiography manuscript of Omar Ibn Said (c. 1770-1863), a Muslim scholar who was captured in West Africa and brought to Charleston, South Carolina as a slave in 1807 at the age of 37. Accompanying this autobiography are 41 items, most of which were originally assembled by Theodore Dwight, an abolitionist and a founding member of the American Ethnological Society. The items include texts written by other slaves, personal correspondence between Dwight and the first two presidents of Liberia: Stephen A. Benson (1816-1865) and Joseph Jenkins Roberts (1809-1876), correspondence between Rev. Isaac Bird, and the founder of the Syrian Protestant College, Daniel Bliss, as well as newspaper clippings and journal articles published between the late 19th century and the 1970s. Following is a list of the items in the collection.
