About this Collection
The Timor-Leste Elections Web Archive covers the presidential and parliamentary elections of 2012 and 2017.
Timor-Leste won independence from Indonesia in 2002, and despite internal tensions has held regular elections. Presidential and parliamentary elections occur once every five years. The President appoints the Prime Minister, who is usually the leader of the majority party or coalition in parliament. The Prime Minister presides over the cabinet, while the President is head of state, with veto power when it comes to legislation.
Timor-Leste has a multi-party system, with the main parties being the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT), the Revolutionary Front of Independent Timor-Leste (FREITLIN), the Democratic Party (PD), the Frenti-Mudança, the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), and Kmanek Haburas Unidade Nasional Timor Oan (KHUNTO).
