Arriving in Saigon in the earliest days of 1966, Sergeant George Mikey Mabe spent nearly the entire year serving in Vietnam. As part of a combat unit with the 101st Airborne Division, much of his time was spent in the bush, taking part in search-and-destroy missions and long-range patrols. In his memoir, he offers matter-of-fact descriptions of his daily life in Vietnam, including small but important details such as the logistics involved in heating canned rations or sending letters home. Mabe’s photographs--which, he explains, were taken while he was stationed in rear areas, away from combat—further illuminate the activities and typical experiences of a combat infantryman.
