Personal Narrative Manuscript/Mixed Material Photo, Print, Drawing Patricia L. Lala Collection

Veterans History Project Service Summary:
- Service History Note: Lala participated in a letter writing project from 1967-1969.
- War or Conflict: Vietnam War, 1961-1975
- Location of Service: United States
- Military Status: Civilian
During the Vietnam War, Patricia Lala corresponded with Marines she met through school, friends, and a letter-writing club. While married to Vince Pugliese, she became a member of the local Junior Women's Club and began writing to many Marines stationed with the 3rd Marine Division. What is different and notable in the collection is the voice of protest of the Vietnam era, and a clear change in society's mores. What is familiar from our accounts of all wars, is how important correspondence is to all troops, even when they do not know the sender.

Notes
- - During the Vietnam War, Patricia Lala corresponded with soldiers she met through school, friends, and a letter-writing club. While married to Vince Pugliese, she became a member of the Junior Women’s Club and began writing to soldiers stationed with the 3rd Marine Division. During this time, she also began corresponding with Marines she met in Oceanside, California, the home of Camp Pendleton. Lala’s submission also includes correspondence with Ruben Yuriar, a high school acquaintance and major in the U.S. Army whom she later married. After her second divorce, she resumed the use of her birth name Lala. Her submission has been grouped and organized into three major sections: 1) Junior Women’s Club 3rd Marine Division correspondence; 2) Yuriar correspondence; and 3) Oceanside correspondence.
