Enlisting in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) in late June 1945, Technician Four Audrae Marie Miller Gandreau served first at Fort Benning, Georgia, and then at Fort Monroe, Virginia. Despite some initial hesitation about her decision to enlist—particularly the physical training, known as PT, that was part of basic training—she grew enthusiastic about both her work in Army administration and also her fellow soldiers. Writing her mother on October 10, 1945, she explained, "I’m meeting people from every (and I mean every) walk of life, and in uniform, we are all one big happy family." Her letters provide a glimpse into the life of a WAC serving stateside, and the interactions between genders in a field that had previously been off-limits to women.
