Motivated by a lifelong fascination with the military and a deep desire to serve his country, and despite the grave concerns of his mother, New Yorker Daniel "Danny" Armando Fuentes enlisted in the Army in 2005. Serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fuentes was killed during his first deployment to Iraq in April 2007. In her oral history interview, his mother, Nancy Fuentes, describes the loss of her respectful, determined son, and the impact of his death on his family. She also discusses the ways in which she has sought to give meaning to his death, including the establishment of a memorial scholarship fund at his former high school.
