While many military doctors treat combat casualties inflicted by the enemy, others face damage done by a different adversary, that of disease. Called to active duty in May 1951, during the last year of his residency, Captain Herman Froeb was already well-versed in the field of medical research. Assigned to the 8228th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH), the center for all fever patients in Korea, he and his team carried out advanced scientific experiments to investigate the causes and treatment of a condition known as hemorrhagic fever. In addition to his interview, his collection includes home movie footage taken during his time in Korea, depicting scenes of his arrival in Korea, patients being transported by helicopter, and village life around his MASH unit.
