First Lieutenant Jack Danner, Jr. deployed to Vietnam in August 1965 with the 1st Cavalry Division, part of the initial buildup of American forces there. Danner participated in construction of Camp Radcliff near An Khe in the Central Highlands, later serving for three months as an adviser with a South Vietnamese battalion before returning to the 1st Cavalry Division and assuming the duties of a company executive officer. He helped lead his company through several operations during their year in Vietnam, including Operation White Wing/Masher, a large search-and-destroy operation that Danner remembers vividly and is depicted in many of the photographs in his collection.
