SPECIAL CONCERT
SATURDAY, APRIL 7, 2018 at 2:00 PM
Join us for a special afternoon concert presenting young players from the BSO’s impressive OrchKids project. Inspired by Venezuela’s El Sistema, OrchKids is a year-round music program designed to create social change and nurture promising futures for youth in Baltimore City neighborhoods.
The OrchKids players will premiere a composition inspired by a visit to the Library’s 400,000-item Leonard Bernstein Collection. Their encounters with the composer’s scores, manuscripts and photos—plus several report cards and school essays from his teenage years—sparked an enthusiastic joint effort to create a fascinating new work reflecting Bernstein’s legacy.

CONCERT: Leonard Bernstein's America
Michael Barrett, Music Director
We see Bernstein as social observer, revealed in three major stage works. His musical 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue portrays sharp racial divides over 100 years of White House history. The operas Trouble in Tahiti and A Quiet Place paint a vision of a family’s struggles—and offer a glimpse of reconciliation.
