Great Reads from Great Places

"The Sea in Winter" by Christine Day

Age: 8-12 years

Maisie Cannon has had a hard year: Ever since she hurt her leg, she can’t keep up with her ballet training and feels completely hopeless. As loving and supportive as her blended family tries to be, Maisie isn’t excited for their midwinter road trip to the indigenous Makah community where her mother grew up, and she wonders how she can continue to be strong when anxieties and dark moods start to take over.

Christine Day grew up in Seattle, Washington, and is a citizen of the Upper Skagit tribe. She writes books for middle grade and young adult readers. “The Sea in Winter” (Heartdrum) is her second novel.
